Construction Project!

Today, I started a LONG overdue construction project…  We are remodeling our laundry room!  I pulled the washer and dryer out in the hall (we will be without them for a few days so I told the kids to be sparing on throwing the clothes down if they are clean) and also pulled everything off the walls.  I then ripped up the vinyl tile pieces on the floor and ripped up the sub-floor.  After ripping up the sub-floor, I had to pull out probably 2000 staples out the floor.  I don’t think I ever want to see another staple again!  😐

We are going to have a friend of ours who is a contractor come in and lay new porcelain tile (no more of this junk vinyl tile for us)!  🙂  We are going to paint the walls and trim, and I am designing a new laundry room with new cabinets and lockers for each of the kids to put their coats, shoes, etc. in.  We hope it turns out great!  We have a LOT of work to do, and my knees are aching right now!

Youth Theme Fireside

Today was a pretty cool day in our home.  After church members of the Young Women’s Presidency came over to visit Kirstyn to welcome her into the YW Program!  🙂  It’s really hard to believe that she will be 12 this week and now we’ll have to be more careful of our Tuesday plans because we will no longer have a babysitter at home!  Yikes!

Speaking of babysitters, we had to get one tonight for the first time in years because we had the Youth Theme Fireside tonight… All three of the girls went and participated in the program.  Brittany and Kirstyn sange with all of our ward’s youth, and Sarah was one of the stars of the program!  She was involved as a member of the youth committee that planned the evening and she wrote a bunch of the program.  She also was one of the leading “actors” in the performance that they put on.  She did a wonderful job and was very outgoing!  Way to go girls!

Senior Leadership Team Retreat

Over the past 2 days, I had an IT Senior Leadership Team retreat that I was invited to at the Wyndham Hotel in Lisle.  As the chair of the IT Leadership Committee, I have been able to work closely with the committee to help draft the Grant Thornton IT strategy for the next 3-5 years.  We had a great discussion re-visiting the strategy, now that we have a full year of it under our belts.  We had some great discussion and some fun.Yesterday, as a service project, we went to Feed My Starving Children as a group.  We worked hard along side others and packed 92 boxes, which represents 19,872 meals that will feed 55 kids for a year.  It always feels so good to go there and to help.  Every time I go, I have a lot of fun and it is always for a good cause.  ).

After we finished up at Feed My Starving Children, we had dinner at Luigi’s house, a great Italian restaurant nearby.  We ate until we were stuffed!  What great food!

Today we finished up our discussions and I got home a little early, much to the surprise of the family!  🙂  When I got home, Angela and I went down to see Sarah at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.

We took the camera and embarrassed her!  🙂  It doesn’t take much at all to make Brittany mortified of us, but we have to work pretty hard to get Sarah to be embarrassed of of us.  I think we did it!  🙂

Keep up the GREAT work Sarah!

Date Night and Open House

Tonight we had a date night at the Chicago Temple with the Thompson’s and had a wonderful time.  We always like going with others up to the temple.  We have great conversations while driving up and back and it’s nice to be in the temple with friends.

After we got back from the temple, we drove over to the house of a family in the ward (Bitton’s) for a wedding open house they were holding for their son.  The crazy thing about this is that I had him in my Freshman seminary class all those years ago.  It seems weird that my little 14-year-old friends are now all getting married!  😐  We ate a TON of great food!  It was amazing at how large the spread of food was.  We were really full when we left, but that didn’t stop us from going out to Biaggi’s restaurant nearby for a great bowl of sherbet ice cream!  🙂  Now, we’re really full!

End of Semester!

Whew!  What a long awaited time!  The semester finally came to an end.  All of us were extremely worried after every quiz was taken, every test completed, and every assignment turned in for the past 2 weeks.  Sarah and Brittany were teetering on the edge of grade levels in many of their classes, and fortunately, most tipped on the side of the higher grade.  Great job girls!

Mystery Reader!

Today, Angela surprised Zachary at  school!  She signed up to be the “Mystery Reader” today for Zachary’s class.  She submitted questions for the teacher to read to the class so the kids could guess who was coming in.  They really liked that and when it came to the point that she had 5 kids, Zach knew it was him!  He has more siblings than any other student in his class (and probably in the entire 1st grade)!  🙂

Angela chose the book “A Bad Case of Stripes” to read to the class and the class really liked it!

Most of the kids had seen the book and many had read it before and loved it when Angela read to them.  Zach sat on her lap and helped and that made him feel REALLY important!

New Years Eve Festivities!

Tonight we had a great New Year’s eve party at the Thompson’s.  We at a bunch of food, played Just Dance on the Wii, and had a great time talking and hanging out.  We like these kinds of parties because they are always pretty “low-key” and a lot of fun.  The boys did really well and ben didn’t break anything!  🙂

Happy New Year everyone!  We’re looking forward to a GREAT 2011!

The Big Dance!

Tonight, Sarah and Brittany went to the big multi-stake New Year’s Eve dance in Naperville at the stake center.  Brittany has been taking about this for weeks and was so excited!  They had a great time and saw a lot of friends.  Unfortunately, Sarah hasn’t had her license for a year yet, so I had to drive them to the dance and then pick them up again when it was over.  It’s always fun to pick them up because you get to hear the non-stop jabber about everything that happened, every cute guy that they ran into, etc. etc. etc.  🙂

Downtown, Art Institute, and Sledding!

Today we had “split family” day…  Angela went with Julie and Abby Thompson and our girls downtown to visit the Chicago Art Institute and to have fun walking around downtown.  They drove downtown and had a great time.  They first went to the Art Institute and “became cultured young women.”  🙂  It’s always fun to see the kids’ reaction to some of the art there.  As usual, there are some that receive “even I could do that” comments, and then there are some of the very bizarre ones.  They always like the masterpieces by masters like Degas, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Picasso, etc.

After the Art Institute, they went shopping at Macy’s (Marshall Field’s) and on Michigan Avenue.  They bought a bunch of bath stuff from a store called Lush in side Macy’s.  They enjoyed the decorated windows before all the decorations came down.

Meanwhile, I took the boys and went sledding and  had a bunch of fun!  We got all bundled up and went to a nearby hill (one of the only hills in the county) and went sledding.  The boys just loved it and had a great time!

After sledding, we came back to the house, had hot chocolate, watched a movie, had nap time, and then waited for the girls to come back!  It was great lounging around not doing much!  🙂

Dinner and Zoo Trip

Tonight we had a GREAT (but very cold) night!  We went with our friends, the Thompson family, out to dinner and then to Brookfield Zoo to see the Christmas decorations and light shows there before they took them down for the season.  It was freezing but we had a great time!  It was down in the single digits when we go there and we had to bundle up!

We first saw a guy doing ice sculptures and they were pretty amazing!  He had bare hands while doing it and we told him he was nuts!  His creations were cool though…

After that, we walked around the zoo, saw all the lights, and went in a bunch of the animal houses (when we were numb and needed to thaw out)!  🙂  When everyone went into one of the places, I took Ben over to the kids area, went inside, and painted his face.  He thought that was MUCH cooler than looking at animals!  🙂

Right before we left, we all went inside and got some hot chocolate to warm up our insides.  We were pretty cold but had a great time!  On our way out, we took a picture of all the kids by the Bookfield Zoo lion statue.

We’re pretty tired now and will sleep very well tonight, I think!

Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas everyone!  What a wonderful day!  This last year has gone so fast and it’s hard to believe it’s Christmas day again!

As usual, the kids got up early and woke us up.  They were so excited to go downstairs and were very temped to leave mom and dad behind!   They were very good, however, and just sat at the top of the stairs while we rolled out of bed, threw some water on our faces and got ready to celebrate!

The kids (and mom and dad) were very excited to see what Santa had brought and dropped off!  Ben was the most excited about his dump truck and loader, Zach screamed out loud when he saw his Indiana Jones had, bag, and other props, and the girls really liked their stuff: sleeping bags, books, shoes, movies, candy, etc.  Sarah even liked her ACT prep books!  🙂

After we played with the Santa presents, we had a little breakfast and then opened the presents under our tree.  We love opening gifts from family.  This year was great because the kids made things for  each other and it really meant a lot (especially for mom and dad)!  🙂

After cleaning up, we lounged around the rest of the day, eating junk food, watching movies, playing with toys, etc.!  We love relaxing when we get a chance!  🙂

Merry Christmas everyone!
