AVA Choir Caroling and Friends in Castle Rock

Yesterday, we got to see the Pocock family who we got to be friends with in Naperville.  They decided to move out west and are looking to move to Castle Rock or somewhere close by!  🙂  Ben and their son Jake are really good buddies and Ben can’t be more excited!  They came over yesterday before going back to Illinois.  They will most likely be moving out here right after Christmas!

Today Zach and his Aspen View Academy school choir went to a nearby assisted living center named Bonaventure and caroled for the residents there.  They had a GREAT time and I got to go and help chaperone the group.

At first, they sang in the main atrium to a group gathered there.  Then they went to another wing and sang to those who were not quite so mobile.  Zach really enjoyed it and loves singing.  They then went back to Aspen View and had hot chocolate with marshmallows.  We weren’t quite sure which was their favorite part, singing or the hot chocolate.  Either way, they provided a great act of service to the community.

Baby Blessing and Return Home

Today we got up REALLY early in Salmon and left (5:30am) to drive down to Rexburg for the blessing of Mark and Jocelyn’s baby Paxton.  Leaving that early from Salmon requires everyone to keep on the lookout for deer and elk darting out in the middle of the road.  It is somewhat nerve-racking as in the pitch black, it’s like you are driving in a tunnel and can’t see off to the side very well.  Fortunately for us, we didn’t see any wildlife near the road and got down to Rexburg without incident.

The blessing was very nice. It’s hard to realize that Mark, who was born after Angela and I were married, is now blessing his own little baby boy.  Crazy!

After the blessing we started the long 10 or so hour drive home.  Everything was uneventful until we got down to I-80 at about Rawlins.  The wind really picked up and there were warning signs about 70+ mile-per-hour winds.  It was blowing so hard, the van doors were whistling which we had never experienced before.  It was a crazy drive and was somewhat difficult to keep the van on the road.  We finally made it to Cheyenne and started south, after which the wind died down and we made it home without further issue.  What a crazy evening!

We’re now home and excited to sleep in our own beds!  🙂

Hanging out in Salmon and Retirement Party!

Today we found out that Kirstyn made the high school musical (Once Upon a Mattress)!  She was SO excited and couldn’t contain herself.  She didn’t get the part she had the callbacks for but another lady in waiting part which is one of the major parts as well.  🙂  That’s pretty great for a freshman to get a main part!  Usually the schools don’t cast that way.  Great job Kirstyn!  Congratulations!

He hung out all day in Salmon and relaxed and enjoyed family company. Ben, Zach, and I went for a walk and enjoyed the clean air and crisp chill.  🙂

After that, the kids spent the day playing and making gingerbread houses.  They had a blast!  We’re not sure if more candy ended up on the houses or inside of their tummies!  🙂

Tonight we had a retirement party for Dad.  He’s finally hanging up the work boots!  🙂  We took Mom and Dad out to dinner to celebrate while all the kids decorated the front of the house and made a surprise party for him (cake and everything)!

Congratulations Dad!  You deserve a break!  Well… only until the middle of January when you go on your 2nd mission together!  🙂

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Today we had a wonderful time spending time with family and enjoying the Thanksgiving Holiday!  Everyone met at Grandma and Grandpa Hobbs’ home for dinner and we all enjoyed each others company.  As to be expected, there was a TON of food and we were all stuffed when we were done!

The weather is crisp and cold but we enjoy it!   It is beautiful up here in the Salmon River Valley.  Brittany has been taking pictures like crazy…

Right now we’re just relaxing and not doing much which is a needed break for us!  🙂

BYU Idaho Tour and Arrival in Salmon

Today we got up early and drove up to Rexburg to do a BYU Idaho tour.  The girls did the tour while Zach, Ben, and I wandered around campus and checked everything out.  There was no one in the big gym so we went in there and the boys had fun..

After the tour was done, we went to the bookstore and browsed around for awhile.  We then left campus, got some food, and then drove up to Salmon for Thanksgiving.  Brittany enjoyed the campus visit so we’ll see what she decides to do.  She should find out in January whether she has been accepted to BYU-I and then she’ll make her decision.  Right now it’s down to Utah State and BYU-I.

It’s nice to be in  Salmon now and relaxing after all that driving over the past couple of days.  We’re excited to be up here for Thanksgiving!

USU Tour and Brigham City Temple

Today, Angela, Brittany, and Kirstyn got up early (after not much sleep) and drove up to Utah State University in Logan for a campus tour.  Brittany was really excited and is leaning toward USU right now for school.  They had a great time there while the boys and I slept in and then relaxed for most of the day!  🙂

After the tour, I met them at the Brigham City Temple where I was able to do baptisms with the girls.  That was a real highlight for me.

After we got home from the temple, we went up to Chantelle’s for a great dinner and got to spend time with everyone up there.  We love being with family and it’s great that now our drive time is cut down by a LOT to be able to see them.  🙂

Kirstyn Callbacks and Leave for Utah

Today Kirstyn had her callbacks for the musical at the high school!  She was really nervous, but she had practiced a TON around the house and due to the fact that she is such a drama queen anyway, we think she’s got a pretty good chance of making it!

We picked her up after a great callback session and started on the road for Utah at about 5pm.  We rolled into North Ogden at about 2am and we are really tired from the drive.  It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.  We didn’t see or come close to hitting any animals, and with a little Mountain Dew and a book on CD, things went pretty smoothly.  I didn’t have to fight to stay awake!  Whew!  🙂

We’re looking forward to spending the Thanksgiving break with family!

Dedication of New Building

Today the new church building was dedicated.  It was a wonderful service and it was very interesting to hear how the church has grown in our area.  Not too many years ago it was one ward, and now we have a stake and 12 wards!  Amazing!

Medieval Fair

Today, Zach had his 4th grade “Medieval Fair” at school.  He and his group have been working on this for a LONG time, building things, creating costumes, flags, banners, etc.  He had a GREAT time!  Angela went over to help out in the classroom today with it and had fun as well.  We built swords for his group, and Zach and I made a cool helmet for him.  They got to have sword fights, jousting matches, and all kinds of other cool things.

Great work Zach!  Glad you had fun and all the hard work to pull this together was worth it!  🙂

Lunch with Zach

Today, Zach had his thanksgiving feast in the lunchroom and Angela, Ben, and I went to accompany him.  It was super-crowded because there were tons of parents there.

We had a great time with him.  What is really cool about Aspen View Academy is how supportive the parents are.  Some of it is because there is a mandatory number of hours that each family has to give for their kids to attend, but most of it is because the parents are invested in making sure their kids get a great education.  We really like the new school so far!  🙂

Brittany Field Trip

Today Brittany went on a river trip for her Aquatic Biology class.  Angela went along with her as a chaperone since this kind of stuff is right up her alley!  🙂  They had a lot of fun, although it was a tad chilly.  Brittany got to put on big wader boots and go out in the river and do all kinds of interesting observations.  They had a fun time together!

Donuts with Dad and Thanksgiving Feast

Today, much of our free time was spent over at Aspen View Academy!  Early this morning, I took Zach and Ben over to the school for a “Donuts with Dad” event!  They had us enter the school through the library where the book fair was going on.  I had to chuckle because I swear there was also another reason behind having all the dads come for donuts with their kids.  I saw tons of kids begging their dads to buy them books, trinkets, and other things from the book fair.  Getting the “softer” dads in their probably boosted the book fair revenue by a good percent!  🙂

Once we got through the library and into the cafeteria, we had a fun time together eating donuts and I got to meet some of Zach’s and Ben’s friends.

I then left the boys at school and came back home, to get some work done before lunch.  Angela and I went over to the school for Ben’s Thanksgiving Program and Feast.  They had a really cute program put together and they sang for us.  All the parents brought Thanksgiving feast items and we ate pretty well!  The desserts were great too!

What a fun day we had today!  Zach was pretty jealous that he didn’t get to go to the feast!  🙂
