Relaxing and Uneventful Sunday…

Today was fairly relaxing for everyone.  We were all very tired from a late night last night again and so we needed the down time.  I had my usual morning of church-related meetings but other than that, the morning was fairly uneventful.  Sarah also called from Utah and said that she was doing very well.

After Sacrament Meeting, Carmen was tired and so Angela took her home to rest and came back for the rest of the meetings.  When we all got home, we ate a small lunch and relaxed for the afternoon.  It felt great to just have some time to think not have to run anywhere!  🙂  Every Sunday afternoon, we sit down as a family and have Family Council.  This is a time when we discuss our calendar for the week (what everyone is doing and what our family plans are), discuss any issues we have in our family, and talk about what we can do to solve these issues or concerns.  As usual, this next week will be very busy.  I think it may have finally hit Zach that this next week is Carmen’s last full week with us.  He wasn’t too excited about that at all!  🙁

For dinner, we had Mexican Lasagna.  While waiting for the dinner to finish, we were at the table, and Zachary decided he would try to be funny.  He grabbed his stuffed frog, put it on his plate, and then proceded to pretend and poke it with his fork, cut it up, and have it for dinner.  What the weird child!  🙂

Zach-Eating-Frog

The dish was very new to Carmen.  She had never had it before, but besides the pinto and black beans, we think she enjoyed it.  For dessert, Kirstyn made chocolate, peanut butter and oatmeal no-bake cookies.  These kind of cookies are one of our family’s favorites.  They look really strange, but they taste GREAT!

Chocolate-Peanut-Butter-Oatmeal-Cookies

Zach-JoggerAfter dinner was over, Brittany took Benjamin for a walk because he was getting very wiggly and unhappy.  He wanted to go outside!  Zachary also wanted to get outside, so I put him in Benjamin’s jogger and off he and I went.  He loved being outside, sitting there, and relaxing.  We walked all over the neighborhood and enjoyed our time outside.  I don’t think Zach stopped talking the whole time!  He loves to chat and chat and chat and chat.  Once he chats, then he loves to ask question after question after question.

After walking for awhile, he said “Dad, I’m done being with you now.  I want to go back home and be with Carmen!”  I had to laugh at that.  I asked him why and he said that although he liked me, he wanted to be back with his new big sister.  He also told me that he will miss her when she leaves and doesn’t want her to go.  🙂

On our way back home, we took some pictures around the neighborhood.  One of which is of Still Middle School where Brittany attends.  We are trying to take a bunch of pictures so we can put together a slide show and DVD for Carmen so she can remember her experience here in Chicago.

Still-Middle-School

When we returned from our walks, Carmen watched a couple of movies with Kirstyn, while Brittany and I went to Sunday Evening Discussion (SED) at the Wutzke’s home.  We had a great discussion about temples and the importance of them from Linda Bitton, a member of our ward.  She did a GREAT job!  After she shared her thoughts, we closed and had wonderful refreshments (ice cream and butterscotch-chocolate rice crispie treats).

When Brittany and I got home, we finished watching the movie Carmen and Kirstyn were watching and then we all went to bed much earlier than in the past few nights.  We needed the extra sleep!  🙂

Sarah Travels, Carmen Cooks, Brittany Wins!

Today was the day Sarah left for Especially for Youth (EFY).  When we got up, I made a double batch of German Pancakes for breakfast to make sure everyone was full.  Carmen really loved them, so I have included the recipe below:

German Pancakes

6 Eggs, 1 Cup Milk, 1 Cup Flour, 1/2 Cup Sugar, 1 Teaspoon Vanilla, 1/2 Teaspoon Salt, 6 Tablespoons Butter

Melt butter in a 11×13 pan in the oven at 350 degrees.  Put the eggs into a blender and blend until bubbly.  Add milk, flour, sugar, vanilla, and salt and blend until light and bubbly.  Remove the pan with melted butter from the oven and pour the egg mixture into pan on top of butter.  Bake in the oven at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes.  Cut into squares and serve with powdered sugar, syrup, jam, or in Carmen’s case, chocolate syrup.  🙂

After eating breakfast, we got Sarah all ready to go and we went and picked up Hannah Moye (Sarah’s friend who is going with her to EFY) to go to the airport.  Brittany and Carmen came with us.  The airport adventure for Sarah and Hannah went well.  This is the first time either of them had flown without their parents (or adults of any kind).  They looked like pros.  🙂  Their flight safely arrived in Salt Lake City and they called to let us know that.

Brittany-Carmen-TempleAfter we dropped them off from the airport, Brittany, Carmen and I drove the short way up to see the Chicago Temple.  Even though today was cloudy, it was nice and cool and an overall beautiful day.  We talked to Carmen about what the temple is, why we go there, and how important it it is to us in the Church while we walked around the grounds for a little bit.  She thought the building and the grounds were very beautiful.

At about that time, it was time for lunch, so I took the two girls to Wendys where they enjoyed double-stacks with cheese, french fries, and Carmen’s favorite – Frosties!  🙂  This time we went inside, sat down, and enjoyed the food rather than going through the drive-through and picking it up.

Brittany-Carmen-Wendys2

After finishing up lunch, we drove home.  Both fell sound asleep in the van.  I think they needed some rest time.  There was an unusually high amount of traffic on the roads today so it seemed like it took forever to get back home.  When we finally arrived, the girls were somewhat rested and ready to keep going!

Today Carmen wanted to cook dinner for us and so she tried her hand at making tortilla de patatas for the first time.   This is a Spanish dish that they have all the time for lunch and dinner over there.  It is like an egg and potato omelet without the cheese.

Tortilla-de-Patatas1

Tortilla-de-Patatas2

It was very good.  I think that we decided it needed just a little more salt, but we enjoyed this very much!  She was so excited to cook this!  🙂  You could see her excitement as we were making it.  It was very cute!  We’ll have to make this more often for meals.  It might even be good for breakfast!

After dinner, the girls watched the movie “Inkheart” and played the Wii until it was time to go to bed.  Angela played the piano for awhile as well.

Angela-Piano

Later, Angela and I joined in with the Wii as well.  I won the bowling tournament, Carmen beat us all in the baseball home run contest, and Brittany beat everyone in everything else!  🙂  Brittany has had a lot of practice, though!  We went to bed very tired and ready to sleep well!

Harry Potter and More Parties!

CrepesToday, as seems to always be the case lately, we had a very busy and late day.  I took the day off of work to relax and play with the family.  We all got up a little late because of the late night card-playing from last night.  I got a craving for crepes, so Angela got a break from making breakfast today and I made crepes for everyone.  We enjoyed them filled with fresh blueberries, jam, syrup, chocolate sauce (Carmen’s favorite), and other items.  I hadn’t made these in awhile.

After finishing up with breakfast, we got all ready for the day, drove to the store, bought a bunch of candy, harry-potter-and-the-half-blood-princeand then Sarah, Brittany, Kirstyn, Carmen, and I want to see the 11:20am showing of the new Harry Potter movie.  We all really enjoyed it!  After it was over, we all agreed that we thought the book was better, but the movie was very entertaining. 🙂

Since the movie was so long (164 minutes), it was mid-afternoon before we even got back home.  We were all so tired we crashed and slept for awhile.  I couldn’t even stay awake!  I think we all needed a little down-time.

At 5:30 pm, Sarah, Brittany, and Carmen went over to the Gaul’s for a party with some of the Spanish kids and with some of their school friends.  They had a great time there eating food, jumping on the trampoline, having a scavenger hunt around the neighborhood, and hanging out around the fire pit roasting marshmallows.  Marta made tortilla de patatas (an omelet dish) for them as well which the girls enjoyed.  The hit of the night was the trampoline, however.  Carmen said that they don’t have this in Spain and she had a blast along with everyone else  jumping in it.  I went over at about 11:00 pm to pick them up and we ended up not coming home until about midnight.   We all immediately crashed into bed.

Honorary Citizen, Beach, Track, and Celebration!

Today was quite the busy day for everyone!  Today’s excursion for Carmen included meeting with the Mayor of Naperville and then going to Centennial Beach to swim and have fun.  When they met with the Mayor, each of the students was made an honorary citizen of Naperville.  They received a certificate making it official!

Today is also Carmen Day in Spain!  Each day there, they celebrate a saint or someone important.  All the Carmens were celebrated today in honor of St. Carmen of Spain.  We celebrated by getting German Chocolate Fudge custard (ice cream) from Culvers.  Carmen (as we have mentioned before) really likes chocolate.  The only thing you have to do to get her to smile is mention chocolate.  It’s pretty funny!  🙂

After their inauguration as honorary citizens of Naperville, the group went to Centennial Beach to swim and hang out for the afternoon.  Compared to where Carmen goes to the beach, it’s not really a beach, but they have done a pretty good job in building out this swimming area off of the River Walk.

Zach-Track-Meet

Zachary wearing Kirk's jacket and holding Angela's umbrella.

I picked Carmen up on my way home from work and we ran back home for a quick dinner before all leaving to go to Brittany’s final track meet for the Waubonsie Track Club.  This meet was at Neuqua High School (rival high school in the district).  It looked like it was going to rain pretty hard and we prayed for good weather (Brittany especially).  It couldn’t have turned out to be a better night for track.  It was cool with a very light breeze and overcast, but only a small amount of rain fell at the first (as you can see from crazy Zachary’s picture to the left)!.  Then it cleared right up!

Brittany ended up doing the:

– Shot put:  19′ 6″

– Triple jump:  22′ 4 1/2″

– 100 meters:  19.151 seconds

– 200 meters:  34 seconds

– 400 meters:  1 minute 21 seconds

She did very well and got 5 ribbons for her efforts.  A couple of the events were personal bests!  She had never run the 100 meters before and thought it would be fun to try! Here are some additional pictures from the meet:

Congratulations on your achievements, Brittany!

We are very proud of Brittany and her accomplishments.  She had tried very hard this summer to do well in track.  She has had some great coaches who work hard to help them become better (even though this track club is all about just having fun).  After the track meet was done, we all came back to the house and had our ice cream in celebration of Carmen day, and stayed up late playing cards.  Carmen taught us some great card games that she plays with her friends at the pool and the beach during the summer.

Today, Carmen’s mother, Cayetana, sent her a link to show to the family.  It is a video clip of Carmen’s brother Pablo saying hello to the family and also to us!  He is travelling around Spain (20-day trip) as part of a group of 200+ kids from 53 different countries.  He won a research and writing contest as part of a program that allows for this and he will also go to Chile at Christmastime.  Here is a link to the video clip of him:  Pablo Montanes Says Hello! It has been edited to remove other people speaking and posted to my site.  Enjoy!

Bowling, Shopping, and Tie Dye!

We had a day today that was loaded with activities!  It kept us very busy.  I worked from home today and got a lot accomplished.  After a wonderful breakfast from Angela of blueberry pancakes,  Brittany went to her last track practice.  Her last meet is tomorrow.  She has been doing very well and we’re proud of her efforts!  We can’t wait to see her run tomorrow!  While she was gone, Carmen ran a couple miles on the treadmill while Ben and Zach ran around the basement like crazy men.  🙂

Around noon, Angela took everyone but Ben (I stayed home with him to make things a “little” easier on her), and went bowling with Kirstyn and her Activity Days group.  Kirstyn hung out with her friends and had a blast, while Angela took the rest of them (Taylor, Lexi, and Marta met them at the bowling alley) and bowled a couple of games.  They had a great time bowling, eating pizza, and snacking on candy!

Bowling1

Bowling2

For the most part, things went well.  Angela’s big challenge was to keep the kids fed but mostly to keep Zach from running around in other lanes and from wandering in front of other bowlers just as they were ready to roll.  🙂

When they got home, I finished up my work, picked up Marta from the Gaul’s, and took both Carmen and Marta to the mall to go shopping.  Carmen had asked if she and Marta could go to the mall sometime to do some shopping because trying to shop with 30 other kids didn’t give them any time to try on things or to really enjoy the shopping experience.  I needed to get the car serviced and kept putting it off, so this was a good time to go.  I took Brittany with me to keep me company.  Carmen and Marta shopped until 4:30 and then called me to let me know they were done.  I met them and brought them back home.  They were exhausted, but happy!  🙂 While the girls were shopping, Sarah and Taylor went to a baseball game and had a great time there.

Carmen had a chance to talk to her parents this evening as well.  Her dad called up at about 6 pm (1 am their time).  They had a great chat and Carmen was very happy to talk to them.   We have been so busy doing fun things, her parents didn’t know when we would be home, so they waited until that late to call.  🙂

After a dinner of baked potatoes, corn on the cob, and grilled chicken, we went to youth night at the church.  We (Sarah, Brittany, and I)  picked up Taylor, Marta, and Diana Xu (one of Sarah’s friends) and headed over to the church.  Brittany’s group worked on their personal progress activities, while Sarah’s group made tie die t-shirts.

YWActivity1 YWActivity2

They all had a LOT of fun doing this and we can’t wait to see how their shirts turn out.  The Oveson’s (friends of ours who used to be in our Ward) were visiting and it was great to see their kids there.  They have REALLY grown up.  Steven will be going on his mission soon, and Lars, who is 2 years younger is about 6′ 5″!  Brittany had a great time catching up with Maddie.  To end the activity, we took a group photo of Sarah’s class.

YWActivity3

After dropping everyone off, we came home and got ready for bed.  Sarah, Brittany, and Carmen then stayed up until almost midnight playing cards, giggling, and having a GREAT time!  🙂  Carmen taught them some new card games that they are excited to now share with their friends.

Chicago Excursion Tuesday

Our family had a pretty normal day today.  Not much going on with our schedule.  Angela, Brittany and Carmen went for a morning run and said it felt very good to get out and exercise.  Angela went to a surprise birthday party for one of her friends (Saundra Horne), books were taken back to the library, Brittany had her track practice, and Kirk went out with the Bishop to take care of some church business.

Carmen on the other hand, had another excursion where they got to go downtown again.  Today’s excursion included shopping on the “Magnificent Mile” (Michigan Avenue) downtown, going to Millenium Park, and then watching an old movie in Grant Park outside on a huge screen with thousands of other people.

Hancock-Tower

The Hancock Tower on Chicago's "Magnificent Mile." It is 100 stories and 1,227 feet (344 meters) tall.

Angela dropped her off just after noon and the group took the train downtown.  Carmen enjoyed looking around at all the shops and just being in Chicago, but the shopping experience wasn’t too much fun for her.  When you are shopping with 30 people, she said you don’t get a chance to try on anything or really find what you want.  After 4 hours of shopping, she didn’t find anything which was a little frustrating because she got bored.  She also mentioned how expensive things were (i.e. $60 for a t-shirt that some people were spending).  She thought that this was crazy!  She told me that there are some of the students who brought a thousand dollars in cash AND a Visa card with them and were spending insane amounts of money.  She would rather spend her money at the Outlet Mall and get more things for less.  One thing that she also thought was crazy was when they went in the Zara store.  Zara is a clothing store that is big in Spain.  Carmen said that in Spain, that store is common and the clothing is not overly expensive.  She said that the clothes are extremely expensive here!

After shopping, they went to Millenium Park and spent most of their time taking pictures of the bean.  The bean is very hard to describe other than a stainless steel sculpture that is wildly popular in Chicago.

If you look very carefully in the picture below, you can see Carmen taking the picture…

Millenium-Park1

After strolling through Millenium Park, they went to Grant Park to watch an outdoor movie at night.  A HUGE screen is set up outdoors at the park and thousands of people come downtown to watch these movies (usually black and white movies from the 50s).  When they got there, Carmen and one of her friends (Elena) went to find a bathroom and when they returned, the food had been passed out and was all gone.  They had missed dinner! 🙁  So they went looking for food and bought hot dogs from a nearby vendor.  That frustrated her a little bit, but she said the hot dog was good!

outdoor-film-festival

She couldn’t hear the movie very well from where they were sitting, so they slept a little bit and both Carmen and Elena went walking around looking at things and taking more pictures.

They came back from Chicago on the train and I picked up Carmen just before midnight.  All the kids were completely exhausted from the long day.  Carmen said she had a fun time but it wasn’t her favorite excursion (due to the shopping experience, missing dinner, and not being able to hear the movie).  Even though it wasn’t her favorite, she remained positive and happy.

Not a Manic Monday…

Today was a very busy day for everyone.  I probably had the most relaxing day at work!  🙂  The day started off with Sarah’s flute lesson.  Angela took the kids to play at a park while waiting for Sarah to finish up.  Kirstyn, Zach, and Ben had a great time and enjoyed a beautiful, not-too-hot morning.  It’s always hard to get the kids back in the car after playing at the park!

Kirstyn-Ben-Playground Zach-Playground

After Sarah’s flute lessons, Angela took Brittany to track practice from 10-12.  She is doing wonderfully well and is learning a lot.  She’s almost finished with her track club and has her final track meet this coming Thursday.  Today she got a personal best in the shot put!

Angie Gaul picked up Sarah, Brittany, and Carmen and for the entire afternoon, they played.  The older girls (Sarah, Carmen, Taylor, and Marta) went to lunch at Noodles and Company, while the younger ones (Brittany and Lexi) went to Chipotle.  They shopped in downtown Naperville much of the afternoon (didn’t buy much but candy) and then they went and did paddle boats on the Naperville River Walk.  (pictures coming)  They had a great time!

Paddle-Boat-Naperville

The Gaul’s brought the girls back home and then Sarah and Carmen were off again with Mrs. Gaul, Taylor, and Marta to an author dinner.  Angie Gaul works for a bookstore and often, they have authors come and visit and have dinners with them.  Sarah very much enjoyed the activity as I think Carmen did as well (at least she said she did).  🙂

While the older girls were gone, we ate dinner and got the boys to bed.  Angela pulled up her first harvest from our garden today…  beautiful radishes!  She was very happy!  Although our garden area, is very small, it is doing well and much is growing (radishes, tomatoes, peppers, onions, etc.)

Angela-Radishes

When the girls came back home, Sarah invited Taylor, Lexi, and Marta over and we spent the evening together.  Every Monday night, we spend as a family having what we call Family Home Evening.  This is a fun but also spiritual time where we sing together, pray together, and one of the members of the family teaches us about a selected topic.  Tonight we watched a video of the life of Christ and his work in Jerusalem and then his visit to the Americas after his death.  We talked about how the Bible and the Book of Mormon both testify of Him.

After reading scriptures and having family prayers together, we all played a VERY HILLARIOUS game of Apples to Apples!  🙂  We were laughing very hard!  You sometimes take for granted the English language until you have to explain something like “leaf blower,” “touchy-feely,” or “Graceland” to folks who’s command of the English language is limited.  Carmen would translate a bunch for Marta, but it was still funny trying to explain all of these new words they had never seen before.   We had a great time and all went to bed very tired.

Relaxing and Fun Sunday!

Today was a lot less hectic than yesterday. I still had all my early Sunday meetings at the church, but it was nice not having to be anywhere specific after that. Church went very well, although it is very hard for Carmen to follow much of what is going on. Everyone speaks so fast for her and she tries so hard but after awhile it gets very tiring. One of our friends spoke to her in Spanish for a while which she enjoyed. We were all tired by the time church was over and were looking forward to a nice, relaxing afternoon.

Carmen-Zachary-ReadingWe spent the rest of the afternoon reading and relaxing. Angela checked out “Holes” in Spanish for Carmen and she has been enjoying reading that book. Zach enjoyed reading as well. He ran right into Carmen’s room, jumped up on the bed, sat, and read with her. She put her arm around him and he snuggled right up and was a good boy. She is so good to Zachary and we appreciate it SO much. She loves to spend time with him (which we are sure is very tiring for her) but she seems to truly love it.

At about 6:00pm, some more friends (the Hartman family and Laura Dixon) came over and we had another BBQ. Carmen is really loving this BBQ thing! 🙂 She loves the burgers and hot dogs that we are always making. Add some chips (or Cheetos) and she is in heaven! To top that off, we had warm brownies and ice cream which we all enjoyed! I LOVE my new grill! I got it for Father’s Day and not even I can screw up the food now, like I used to all the time!

Grilling-Burgers

Kids-Fort

As a side-note, Carmen’s favorite foods are… Chololate, pizza, Cheetos, burgers, hot dogs, Frosties, Slurpees, and anything with chololate in it. She doesn’t like vegetables much which is GREAT for me! 🙂

While waiting for the food to cook, the kids played out in the back yard. They made a fort up in the swing and had a good time with Carmen playing up there. They also had fun swinging and Ben thought he would climb the slide just for fun (and to make his mother nervous)!

After the BBQ, we watched the 2005 Halliday Family DVD which features the theme from the Incredibles. Carmen enjoys these DVDs of our family very much. The more she watches, the more she realizes how crazy our family is! 🙂

All Back Together Again!

Camp-RiverThis morning after an OK night’s sleep, got up early and walked around the camp. There is some beautiful scenery that I was able to get some pictures of. After waiting for all the girls to get up, I helped get Sarah and Brittany packed up and we left camp and came home. I ended up sleeping in the car (thank heaven I had a pillow). It was VERY humid and I didn’t want to clean up a wet tent later and when I went to the cabin I could have slept in and opened the door, I heard the scurrying of little creatures (mice and maybe a small snake or two)! 🙂 I have done that plenty of times at Scout Camp and elected not to do it this time, so the car was my only option which wasn’t too bad.

On the way home, we stopped by McDonald’s and had some breakfast. The girls were pretty excited to eat there and we had a great talk on the way home about what they liked and didn’t like about camp, the experiences they had, and how much closer they have become to their friends. It’s good to have them back home. We missed them!

After cleaning up the tent, airing out the sleeping bags, and unpacking all their stuff, everyone cleaned themselves up and we went and had a family picture sitting. We were worried about the boys (as usual), but they actually did very well. The pictures turned out great! We will be sending Carmen home with a 5×7 of all of us, and then a 5×7 of just the kids.

P1P6

Having these pictures done will give us a great opportunity to remember our time with Carmen as part of our family this month!

We hurried home from our picture sitting and prepared for a BBQ with the Missionaries from our church (Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días) and with our friends, the Thompsons. We had a great time grilling bratwursts and hot dogs, and having all kinds of great things along with that! For dessert, we had something new that we hadn’t tried before. Julie Thompson had us cut wedges out of bananas, and put chocolate chips and marshmallows inside of what was remaining. These were then wrapped up and put in the oven for 7-8 minutes. They were very tasty along side a large scoop of ice cream! 🙂 We were very crazy, laughed a lot, and were entertained. I wonder if Carmen now thinks that our family and our friends are insane! 🙂

After the party, Sarah, Carmen and I went to a wedding reception for our friends the Spears. The reception was beautiful and had an Asian flair. The bride, Dream (yes that is her real name), is from China and they looked great together!

birthday-luis-1

From there, I dropped Sarah and Carmen off at the Oscarson’s for a birthday party. The Oscarson family has two students from Spain as well (Maria and Luis). It’s Luis’ birthday today and they wanted to celebrate. They made tortilla de patatas, had cake and ice cream, hung out and had a great time. When I picked them up at 11:00pm, they were still going strong, singing and laughing. Tired, but strong! 🙂 It’s now almost midnight, so I’m off to bed. Early day tomorrow!

Pizza for Lunch, Girls Camp, and Outlet Shopping

Angela-Ben-AerobicsWhat a day today was!  Initially I was going to leave early and take Carmen down to spend the day and overnight at Camp with Brittany and Sarah, but Carmen was not feeling 100% and with heavy rain and thunderstorms, she decided to stay home in a nice dry house.  That said, I worked from home half day instead of taking the whole day off.  Benjamin was absolutely hilarious this morning.  As Angela was doing her daily exercise (this morning aerobics), Benjamin came into the room and decided to do them with her.  We were laughing so hard watching him try and mimic the TV and his mom!  🙂  This is just one of a couple that were very funny!

Zach-Sticky-BunsAfter exercise and laughter, we had breakfast.  We finally had the “sticky buns” that Zachary had wanted last Sunday for his birthday breakfast.  He was nice enough yesterday to wait one more day so I could have them with him.  Sticky buns are his absolute favorite breakfast food!

The rest of the morning was spent with Kirk working, and Carmen, Kirstyn, and Zach playing hide and seek, other games, and Carmen reading books to Zachary.  Angela went to the library yesterday and got some easy reader books in Spanish (i.e. an alphabet book) that Zach wanted Carmen to read to him.  He was very excited!  They also played in Kirstyn’s old princess tent.  It was quite funny to see them all in there playing with Carmen.  She has been wonderful with Kirstyn, Zach, and Ben this week.  She loves to play with them and do the things that they want to do.  At first, we thought she would be bored to death without Brittany and Sarah there all week, but she did awesome!

Carmen-Kirstyn-Zach-CastleAfter I finished up my work, we all went out for Pizza for lunch.  When we mentioned this to Carmen her eyes lit up and she was very excited!  Pizza is one of her very favorite foods.  The place we went was an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet and everyone really enjoyed it!  Zachary was more interested in the video game room in the back and Sponge Bob Square Pants on the TV there, so it was a little more difficult keeping his attention on the food!  🙂

After we got back from lunch, Angela went off to an appointment she had scheduled and I got packed and left for Girl’s Camp.  When I got there, Sarah and Brittany were excited to see me, but were sad that Carmen wasn’t there to be with them.  They had really been looking forward to it, but totally understood why she didn’t come.  It was great to see Sarah and Brittany having fun.  I (and Angela too, obviously) have really missed them.  It was wonderful to have them run up to me and give me great big hugs.  I really enjoy spending time with my girls.

While I was at camp, Angela took Carmen shopping at the outlet mall.  Carmen was very gracious about this, and enjoyed the experience very much.  She bought a few things there (not sure yet what becuase I haven’t been home), but she wanted to shop for her family first before getting anything for herself.  Angela was very impressed by this.  After shopping, they came back home, got the little ones in bed, and then relaxed and watched a movie (with Spanish subtitles to assist with understanding).  🙂

Back at camp, we experienced a small miracle.  There were supposed to be severe thunderstorms with a strong likelihood of tornadoes all evening and through the night.  The leaders had a campwide prayer with the girls to ask for good weather so they wouldn’t have to come home tonight.  Within an hour, the weather cleared up by early evening, there was not a cloud in the sky nor anything showing up on radar coming our way!

Girls-Camp1

We had a wonderful evening tonight.  Sarah got hear yellow feather (an honor that 4th year girls get), and received the Indian name of “Spotted Deer” to go with her honor.  I’m not exactly sure where the tradition for that came from, but it was very nice.  After that, we had a camp-wide testimony meeting and then broke up into Wards to have a message from the Bishops, a Ward testimony meeting, and then treats from the Bishop.  It was a very nice night and everyone was greatly uplifted.

Chicago Excursion!

Today was Carmen’s excursion to downtown Chicago. Angela dropped her off at the Route 59 train station at 9:15 and the group took the train down to go up the Sears Tower and to take a 3-hour bike ride tour up and down the lake front (Lake Michigan). Carmen said she had a great time but it was a very long and tiring day! 🙂 Riding a bike for 3 hours really wore her out! She loved the Sears tower and took a lot of pictures of the city. They just added glass floor and glass wall extensions to the Sears Tower observation deck so you can walk out onto the glass and look straight down. Pretty cool! Here are some pictures of Carmen at the Sears Tower…

Carmen-Sears-TowerBefore going, Carmen said that she would be scared to go out on the glass floor of the Sears Tower observation deck, but when she got there, she did just fine. Pretty scary to see someone sitting on glass over 1,450 feet (442 meters) in the air!

She said that the only time it made her nervous was when some American Teenage Boy came up by the side of her and started stomping his foot on the glass next to her! 🙂

After going to the Sears Tower, they picked up their bikes and took a 3-hour bike tour of the Chicago lake front. She was not sure how far they biked, but the Chicago lake front bike path is about 19 miles (30 km) of beautiful park which includes beaches, tennis courts, soccer fields, and much more. It really is a beautiful part of Chicago.

They biked as far south as the Field Museum of Natural History where the picture below was taken. All went well except for 1 bike accident. One of the girls fell and cut her chin open pretty badly. They bandaged it up, but had to take her to the hospital in Naperville for stitches when they returned back tonight. OUCH!

Below are some pictures of the Chicago skyline that Carmen took while she was there.

Angela-Ben-AerobicsMeanwhile, back at home, Kirk had a normal day at work and Angela worked hard to get laundry done, clean house, and get ready for the weekend! We did have a funny moment, however… While Angela was doing her daily exercise routine (today it was aerobics), Benjamin decided to join in and exercise along with her! It was very funny.

Due to the bike accident, the group missed their 6:50pm train (the last express train, I might add), and had to take the 7:30pm train (the first one that makes almost all the stops). Because of that, they didn’t get in until about 8:45pm. Zachary was sad about the train delay because he wanted badly to go to pick up Carmen but had to go to bed instead! 🙂

I picked both Carmen and Marta up at the train station and they were very tired. Carmen came back home, ate some late dinner and went right to bed. What a great day!

Lunch, Grant Thornton, Frosties, and Family DVDs

Claimjumper-Inside

The inside of the Claim Jumper Restaurant.

Today ran at a slower pace than yesterday.  Carmen was exhausted after her Six Flags trip so she slept in and got some much needed rest.  Pancakes were on the menu for breakfast which she (and everyone else) really enjoys.  I think that Kirstyn and Zachary really like having Sarah and Brittany off at girls camp because then they get Carmen all to themselves!  🙂

The Cheeseburger Carmen Ordered (hers was only with meat and cheese, however).

For lunch, Angela drove everyone over to Oakbrook Terrace to see me (Kirk) at work and to have lunch.  We ate at the Claim Jumper restaurant and really enjoyed our food.  When Carmen saw their signature cheeseburger on the menu, her eyes lit up and she asked if she could have one.  Claim Jumper is known for it’s very large portions, and the burger was big.  She ate the whole thing and was VERY full after the french fries and strawberry lemonade.  Zach had mini corndogs, Kirk had Black Tie Chicken Pasta, Kirstyn had mini burgers, and Angela had a barbeque chicken salad.

Carmen, Zach, and Ben at Kirk's Office at Grant Thornton

After lunch, we went over to my office building and gave Carmen and everyone else a tour of Grant Thornton.  We saw my office, introduced Carmen to a bunch of people, and took a tour of our data center with all the servers and critical applications, as well as all our networking equipment for the firm.  it wasn’t much, but I think it was nice for Carmen to visit and meet some of the people I work with and if anything, to walk off lunch!  🙂

When Kirk got home from work, Carmen was on the computer finding some Spanish recipes that she thought we might like (triple chocolate torte, Gazpacho, and Tortilla de Patatas, and a rice dish with shrimp or chicken).  We had a good time finding them, having her tell us how they are made, and doing a lot of translation in between.  We printed some off for future reference.

Zach-Tied-Up-Angela

What is Zachary thinking? What a funny little guy!

In the meantime, Zachary got a little crazy and tied Angela’s head up with the string on her hoodie!  What a non-stop talker and active boy that little guy is!  Carmen told us that many of the kids from Spain who have met Zach and Ben have told her that they want to bring them back to Spain with them when they return!  🙂

Angela had to go to a party this evening, so I snuck the kids out and we went to Wendy’s to get Frosties.  Kirstyn and Zach love vanilla, while Carmen loves chocolate!  I think that she could eat those every day if she could.

After finishing the Frosties, we looked on-line for awhile and Carmen used Google maps to show us her house in San Fernando, her school, where she plays tennis, and many other sites.  We also looked at many pictures of Cadiz, San Fernando, and the area around there where she spends her time.

I then introduced Carmen to our yearly family DVDs (in which I take our photos from the year and make video of them).  She watched two of them (years 2003 and 2004) with Kirstyn and me on TV eagerly and with a smile.  If she makes it through and watches all of them, she will definitely be a part of our family.  She got a good laugh about all our family’s antics and experiences.

We also have been sending e-mails back and forth with Carmen’s parents, Enrique and Cayetana.  These e-mails are very fun to get.  They are great people and have raised a great daughter.   They have invited us to stay with them when we come to Spain.  What a wonderful invitation!

Carmen is really becoming part of our family!  We know this because Zachary wouldn’t go to bed tonight until he had given Carmen a great big hug.  It was very sweet!  Also, I almost called Kirstyn Carmen and vice versa yesterday which made me laugh!
