September Already!

It’s hard to believe that it’s September already and that the kids have been in school for 2 weeks now.  Zach seems to be doing well and we have had no hint that he’s just got up and wandered out of his classroom during the day.  🙂  Sarah continues to enjoy Seminary and is loving the fact that the new high school is not over-crowded, having only Freshman and Sophomore classes.  Brittany is now running Cross Country.  They have a very small team this year due to the boundary changes in the high schools and middle schools.  She is one of only 3 8th grade girls on the team!  🙂  Kirstyn is doing well also, and just loves her teacher!  We still struggle with not enough time to get everything done and the kids struggle with coming home and getting right into their homework.  😐

YMYWMovieNight-1Tonight we had a young women and young men combined activity at the church and had a lot of fun.  It was originally a movie night, but a large inflatable screen was brought into the gym (probably 10×10 foot in size) and we played Disney Scene-It, boys against girls.  All of the kids were encouraged to dress up as their favorite Disney character, and we had a great showing!  I was one of the judges and it was difficult to pick the top 5 and then to pick the best-dressed character!  As you can see, we had some really wacky costumes, and had some very brave young men show up in full “High School Musical” attire.  🙂  In the end, the winner was Minnie Mouse, just because the cheer from the younger girls was so high-pitched and loud.  The boys couldn’t scream any better!

After the activity, I took Sarah, Brittany, and  Taylor (Sarah’s friend) out for frosties at Wendy’s.  Sorry you missed out on this, Carmen!  They were really good!  🙂

Nauvoo Temple with the Jordan Family

Angela-NauvooTempleToday was a wonderful day!  We left at around 6:30am this morning and drove down to Nauvoo.  Today was a big day for some friends, the Jordan Family.  Carla went through the temple for the first time and then the entire family (Sydney, Carla, and their 3 kids) were sealed together.  It was a very emotional time for everyone there.  Many people from our ward were there to support them.  We all love the Jordan family and to see them all in white in the temple was wonderful!

While we were in the temple, Sarah and Brittany did a great job watching the rest of our kids as well as the kids from 2 other families.  We were kind of nervous about letting them walk around Nauvoo by themselves for a few hours, but they did great!  They walked around to many of the sites, hung out in the visitor’s center, and enjoyed the perfect, cloudless day!  It was kind of stressful for them having all the other kids, but they made it through and had a great time!

It was a quick turnaround for all of us and turned out to be a very long day, but a very enjoyable one.  4 hours drive down, 6 hours in Nauvoo, and 4 hours drive back home.  We are all very tired but it was great to support such wonderful friends.

School Curriculum Nights

Today we had curriculum night for both the elementary and the middle school.  They goofed on the timing, so Angela and I had to split up.  I went to the elementary and she went to the middle school.  Both principals were very apologetic about the mix-up on timing.  Anyway, it was fun to go to both Zachary’s and Kirstyn’s classrooms to see their teachers and learn about the changes this year.  We are excited for this year.  Both Zachary’s and Kirstyn’s teachers are repeat teachers for us.  Kirstyn had Zachary’s teacher, Miss Kalvaitis, and both Sarah and Brittany both had Kirstyn’s teacher, Mrs. Gudgeon.  Mrs. Gudgeon told us to apologize profusely to Kirstyn because she keeps calling her Brittany!  🙂

It was fun for Angela to meet Brittany’s teachers as well.  Mr. DeFarno she had  before, and Ms. Yu and Mrs.  Scott are new to the school.  They all seem very good.  I ran over and joined Angela for the very last presentation at the middle school after I finished up at the elementary.  Crazy night!  With all the changes (new high school and new middle school opening), the population at Brittany’s school is now down from 1150 to 780 or something like that!  It is so much of a more relaxing feel at the school than last year.  They have a new principal who we also met and were very impressed by both her and the two assistant principals.

It looks like our tax dollars are a little harder at work than they were last year.  We are very thankful for that!

Another One Down!

Late tonight, I finished the 2009 Hobbs Family Reunion DVD.  Fortunately it fits on 1 DVD and has not only the DVD movie content, but the full-sized photos of all the pictures in the show, a .WMV (Windows Streaming Media) movie file of the slide show, and 2 web albums (1 flash and 1 standard)!  It’s become a family tradition to make  DVDs of all the significant events in our lives (as well as a DVD set for every year).  I’m almost done with the DVD from Carmen’s visit with us this summer.  It will be pretty cool as well!

Speaking of Carmen, it’s hard to believe that it’s almost been a month since she went back home!!!  🙁  We were sitting at the table tonight at dinner and suddenly Zach said…  “I wish Carmen didn’t have to go back home.  I miss her!”  It was very sweet.  We all miss her but have been keeping in contact via e-mail, and Tuenti (Spanish version of Facebook).

Sarah had a great first day of seminary today!  It was quite the drive to get her there (we have to leave between 5:35 and 5:40 to get there on time), but that’s OK.  I think the more we do this, the more we will want to get her a car in October when she gets her license!  🙂

Mustang Mania!

Today Metea Valley High School had a great celebration and kick-off for the year at the building with scrimmages for all the fall sports teams.  The marching band played their pre-game as well as performed their halftime show for the crowd.  Things are really coming together for the band and she LOVES being a marching leader.

After the band played, the football team came out and had a scrimmage game.  It was fun to see the new uniforms of the team, the cheerleaders, the pom squad, and others.  One of Sarah’s friends from Seminary is the starting quarterback of the football team and is the team captain as well.

The more activities like this we go to, we get more and more excited for the kid’s experience at Metea.  Angela and I dressed up in our Metea band shirts and supported the school.  We need to get shirts for the kids as well!  🙂

First Bus and Back to School Party!

Zach-Kirstyn-Bus-StopWell, Zachary rode the bus for the first time today!  😐  Today was his first full day of school and he was pretty nervous!  He went with Kirstyn, however, and she took GREAT care of him and made sure he got to where he needed to go!

It was very funny however…  When he came home after a great day of school, he told us that he had two breakfasts today!  One at home, and one at school.  It turns out that they asked him (we’re still not sure why they would ask a kindergartner about that) if he wanted to eat breakfast and he said SURE!  So he ate!  🙂  We’re not signed up to eat breakfasts and he is not on the free breakfast program.  Kirstyn was mortified when she found out about this and we all had a great laugh.  We told Zachary that he wasn’t to eat breakfast at the school anymore.

Zach-First-Bus-Ride

Sarah had a back-to-school party tonight and had 21 of her friends over to the house!  We were very nervous about the setup because it looked like it was going to rain all day.  They all ate grilled burgers and hot dogs, chips, pop, and all kinds of other stuff.  They hung out in the back yard and had a great time talking about their summers and what they had done.  They then played musical chairs out in the back yard for awhile and then introduced themselves to each other.  It was a wonderful party!  We had representation from all 3 of the high schools in our district and everyone got to know one another.

Sarah-Party-1

Sarah-Party-2

After the food and games were done, we crossed our fingers, prayed, and hoped it would not rain.  We set up a theater in the back yard and watched a movie out there on the big screen!  They munched on chips and salsa, candy, popcorn, cookies, and brownies and had a great time!

Sarah-Party-3

With about 20 minutes to go in the movie, it started to rain, so we hurried and packed everything up and took the movie inside.  They finished watching it in the basement.  They then played ping pong and played on the Wii.  They had a great time.  The party finished up at about 11 and everyone went home.  Overall, a great time was had by all and Sarah really enjoyed getting back together with her friends.

First Day of School!

Well, it’s that time again!  Today the  kids went back to school!  It’s amazing how fast the summer went.  The kids got out in June and with school starting earlier than normal this year, we lost almost 2 full weeks of summer!  Oh well, school will be out before Memorial Day next year which will be something VERY new!  No more June school!

metea-logoSarah was the first off this morning!  She doesn’t start seminary until Monday, so she took the bus today.  6:41am pickup!  It was a historic day for her and the rest of the students as this was opening day for Metea Valley High School!  They had an assembly with all the kids, had a ribbon-cutting ceremonly, and Sarah got to play the fight song with the marching band to celebrate the occasion.  As far as the school day went, she really likes all her teachers so that is a positive thing!  🙂  Not much homework other than coming home and picking out a Spanish name starting with “S” to be called for the rest of the year.  She picked out the name “Sata” which means “princess.”  She liked that name because her name means princess in Hebrew as well.  No break for marching band practice as she had to do that after school until about 5:30 or so.

Brittany was the next off.  Her friends stopped by to walk to school together and she had a great day as well.  She likes her teachers this year also and is excited for the new year.  It’s kind of crazy that she is the “big girl on campus” this year.  She will start up cross country in the next couple of days.  The highlight of her day was going to her classes for the first time, seeing teachers she hadn’t seen all summer, and seeing some of the kids she hadn’t seen all summer as well!  🙂

Kirstyn was the next off!  Angela took her over and dropped her off at the school, where all the teachers were waiting for the kids.  She is so excited to have Mrs. Gudgeon this year and as soon as Mrs. Gudgeon saw Kirstyn, she came running over and gave her a great big hug!

Kirstyn-FirstDaySchool

She had a great day and is so excited to be the “big girl on campus” this year in 5th grade as well!  Mrs. Gudgeon is the first teacher that has had all 3 of our oldest kids so far.  That’s a first!  It’s crazy to think that we have been around at Gombert elementary ever since the 2nd year it opened, over 12 years ago!

Zach was last off!  It’s hard to believe it was his first day of Kindergarten today!  Angela and I took him over (I worked from home in the morning so I could be there too) to school to go over school items with his teacher, Ms. Kalvaitis.  He was excited to see her, but was acting kind of shy.  He was very nervous before going over.  We only had to be there for 30 minutes today, but tomorrow, he will get on the bus with Kirstyn and spend the whole day there.  I think that will be hard for Angela to see him get on the bus!

Zach-FirstDaySchool

It’s amazing at how fast the kids are growing up! We were just talking the other day that in 3 years, we’ll have 1 in college, 1 i n high school, 1 in middle school, 1 in elementary school, and 1 in pre-school!  All bases covered!  WEIRD!  We wish the kids all the best in their school work and Benjamin a very relaxing time at home by himself with Angela!  🙂

New Record! 2008 Family Album Complete!

A new record has been set!  The 2008 Halliday Family Album DVD is now finished!  Normally it doesn’t get done until Christmas of the following year, but it’s August!  This year’s theme is “Unplugged” and refers to no flashy dress-up like in the past (i.e. previous years were things like Halliday Incredibles, Meet the Hallidays, and Halliday Cars).  This year it’s purely,  hence the term “unplugged.”

HallidayFamily2008Album

Cover graphic for the 2008 Halliday Family Album.

The DVD this year contains not only the DVD video, but also:

  • Two web albums (flash based and standard) for viewing in the browser and for future posting on my web site
  • The video created in .WMV format for streaming on the Internet
  • All the full-size photos used in the creation of the DVD

There were so many photos from 2008 (730 of them) that the video had to be split across 2 DVDs.  Last year a dual-layer DVD was created and couldn’t be viewed on some DVD players or on computers without dual-layer DVD players.  Becuase of this, I used single layer DVDs.  Not sure what we’ll do next year as there will be even more photos.  🙂

Good Week and Seminary Kick-Off!

Overall, the past week went very well (Zach party, High School Orientation, parties, band parent preview, etc.)!  The kids will be starting school this week and aren’t too wonderfully excited about that!  This has been a short summer.  The kids got out in June and this year, school starts on the 20th of August!  Where did the time go!

Tonight, Sarah, Angela, and I went to a kick-0ff meeting for Seminary (early morning religious study – 6am every day for those who may not know) this next year.  Sarah will be 1 of only 3 girls in the program of kids going to Metea Valley High School.  She’s the only one from our ward (and our Stake for that matter)!  Before going to the meeting, she wasn’t very excited, but the meeting changed her mind.  It will be a struggle because we live so far away and it will be at a home instead of at a church building, but it will be a great learning experience for her.

We also heard from Carmen this week!  She’s doing well and still has another month before she starts school…  The kids are jealous about that!  🙂  She sent us some pictures of our church building in Cadiz (not too far from her Grandmother’s house) and of where in her home she has our family pictures.  That’s funny about the church in Cadiz being so close to her Grandmother’s house, because the church building in San Feranando where she lives is just a couple blocks from her house!  🙂

Zachary is probably the most excited to go to school.  He will start Kindergarten on Thursday and can’t wait!  🙂  He keeps talking about it and how much he is excited to have his new teacher (which he already knows because Kirstyn had her for Kindergarten as well)!  We had a kindergarten orientation breakfast on Saturday morning which Zachary loved because there was food!  We are a bit nervous because he is going to all-day kindergarten and we’re not sure if he can pay attention that long!  🙂  Cross your fingers!

Metea Valley Marching Mustangs Parent Preview!

Sarah-ParentPreview-1Today Angela and I went up to the new high school to the Metea Valley High School Marching Mustangs marching band parent preview.  We met with the marching band director and found out about all of the schedule for this season, including more details about the Disney World trip during spring break.  We then got to be the first group of parents out on the new field to learn how to march with our students.  It was pretty funny.  It’s amazing how the kids do what they do.

After learning some fundamentals (“fundies”) on the field, we got to go up in the stands and watch the marching band perform the first part of their halftime show.  This year it’s a Beatles theme titled “The Magic Mystery Tour.”  They did a great job, especially since they only have 57 members!  🙂  We were surprised that they took up as much of the field as they did with that few band members!

What was also cool is that there were friends of band members who showed up who play on the Waubonsie marching band.  They wanted to come and support their friends which meant a great deal to the Metea students.

After the show on the field, we went back into the school where the band performed the rest of their show (music only), performed the fight song, and their patriotic pre-game show (“America the Beautiful” and the National Anthem).  It was great!  We are so proud of Sarah for all her hard work!

After the performances, we picked up our “Metea Band Wear” for the season.  Angela got a t-shirt like Sarah’s with the name of the show and all the band members on the back, I got a cool black polo, and Sarah got some Metea Valley Marching Mustangs sweats.  We’re all ready to go to support the band!

Happy Belated Birthday Party Zach!

Even though we had a birthday party as a family when Zach turned 5 on July 5th, he still wanted a friend birthday party, and today was the soonest we could do it.  Angela worked really hard to pull it together.  The theme?  Spalsh Bash!  Zach invited 11 friends over for a backyard water party.  They had a TON of fun!  I did my usual job decorating the cake.  It was a beach and water cake to go along with the theme of the party.

Zach-B-Day-Party-1

Zach-B-Day-Party-2

The kids played all kinds of water games from relays filling up buckets with water from sponges, using squirt guns to soak a paper bag pinata until it broke and bags of candy fell out, breaking apart ice blocks with toys inside of them, sliding on the slip and slide, and getting each other wet!

The kids loved the cake, ate ice cream, and Zach opened presents.  Each person went home with a squirt gun, a bag of candy, and a beach towel as their gift bag.  We had a hard time getting Zach away from the water long enough to thank and say good by to his friends as they left.  It was pretty funny!  Brittany, Kirstyn, and a couple of their friends did a GREAT job helping out with the party.  I got there just as things were wrapping up and helped clean up.  🙂

To celebrate the party being over, Angela and I went out for a quiet dinner together at a great little restaurant!  🙂

Metea Valley High School Orientation

Today was quite the busy day!  While the kids were having fun at home, I was having fun at work.  I went to a seminar from LanDesk this morning (about workstation patching and software license management) at a movie theater in Rosement that was supposed to be a casino.  It’s an incredible theater!

muvico-rosemont

The presentation was good, but after that, they gave us $10 vouchers and we were treated to the new G.I. Joe movie!  Now THAT’s a great seminar!  🙂  The movie was pretty good if you were there for great action (GI Joe meets Ironman)!  The large popcorn and large pop didn’t sit too well the rest of the day though!  🙂

This afternoon and evening was the student and parent orientation for Metea Valley High School, the new high school where Sarah will be going this year.  The picture below is a little old, but it shows the entire campus from above.

metea-2

It’s amazing at how fast the building was put up and completed.  Just last Friday, Sarah and Angela went in and helped set up the band and orchestra equipment (music stands, instruments, etc.).  The band played the new fight song for both sessions of orientation, and Sarah did a wonderful job!  They have a very small band (only 58 compared to the 130 something they had last year at Waubonsie).  That’s pretty good, however, considering that only 2 grades (Freshmen and Sophomores) will be at the campus this next year.

metea-band-1

After the principal and other spoke to us, we got to walk around the school and check it out!  There are many pieces that are not finished yet but will be soon.  The school is move-in ready, however for the first two grades.  The science rooms were amazing (see picture below)!  They looked like college labs!

It was an exciting experience and one that I think energized the students to be excited for school.  While we were in orientation and walked around and checked out the school, the students had a dance which was fun for them.

When we got home, I took Brittany, Kirstyn, and Zachary over to the elementary to watch an outdoor movie (Race to Witch Mountain).  We couldn’t hear a thing so we packed up, went to Wal-Mart and rented the movie from the RedBox kiosk.  We came home and watched it there.  We were much more comfortable and we could hear it!  🙂 While we were doing this, Sarah was spending the evening with friends having a great time!  All-in-all, a GREAT day!
