RLF Graduation and Primary Program

Today I graduated from my leadership program (RLF) in Seattle!  After 9 months of hard work, we finally finished!  We met early this morning and had a giveback session for members of other RLF groups and it turned out really well.  Each person placed a thumbprint on a paper we had stuck to the wall, and then all painted from those thumbprints, their thoughts about RLF and what it has meant to them.  We had a BUNCH of people in there and had some GREAT discussion.

We then had our graduation where one of the members of our group spoke about our experiences.  We were also able to listen to people give speeches from all the other RLF groups as well.  It was a touching experience thinking back on everything we had done over the past year!  After graduation, we had our final meeting as an RLF group.  We each brought beads that described ourselves, and we passed them around and made necklaces out of them.  We then wore them throughout the entire conference!  🙂  People thought it was really cool when they asked what they were for.

While I was doing this, Kirstyn and Zachary were performing in the annual Primary Sacrament Meeting Program at church.  Each had parts to give and they did a GREAT job!  I was sad to miss yet another thing this weekend.  🙁  It seemed that this weekend was the most busy of any in the past couple of months, and I wasn’t able to be there to support the activities.  They worked really hard on all the songs and their parts, and afterward, they made scrapbooks of themselves to give to their families.  It was really sweet!  🙂

Tonight (in Seattle) some of us went out to a nice restaurant and had a relaxing dinner, full of conversation and fun.  I was not too hungry, so I got a big sushi roll that was wonderful!  Others got halibut, tuna, salmon, and the appetizer we got was great too (crab cakes, scallops, and coconut prawn)!  Mmmmmm!  They also gave us complimentary truffles afterward!

What an awesome day!  I’m exhausted from the time change and the long day, however!  🙂

Activity Days, IMEA, Roadshow, and Seattle

Seattle-PikesPlace

Pike's Place Market on the Water in Seattle

Today was a HUGE busy day!  We had a bunch of things going on that took us all in multiple directions.  As part of my leadership program at work, I flew out to Seattle today the Society for Information Management (SIM) conference called SIMposium.  Part was to attend the conference, and the other part was for my leadership program graduation.  I flew out on a 9am flight and got to Seattle at around 11am.  I had a chance to walk around Seattle for the afternoon and then I met a bunch of the folks from my leadership group for dinner.

We had a wonderful dinner down at a restaurant near Pike’s Place Market on the water.  It was called Ettas and I had the Pacific Albacore Tuna.  It was some of the best Tuna I have ever tasted (http://www.tomdouglas.com/restaurants/ettas).  It was wonderful to see the members of our group again!  🙂

Back on the home front, Kirstyn had an activity days breakfast at the church that Angela and her had a great time going to.  This is the first one I have ever missed and felt bad about it.  They enjoyed eating a bunch of good food!

Brittany had her practices and performance also for the Illinois Music Educators Association (IMEA) today.  She sang in the chorus.  This is a yearly program that the top music students throughout the districts in Illinois audition and are selected for.  She had a wonderful time and I missed that as well.  Great job Brittany!

Tonight was also the stake roadshow performances for Sarah and Brittany!  They did a great job and the family (minus me, of course) really enjoyed attending!  All the wards in the stake put on their shows, and each ward had an olio that they performed.  Awards were given out to everyone.  Great job girls!

New Portraits of the Kids (Ben Coming Soon)!

We just picked up new portraits of our kids today.  We decided not to have the school pictures this year so we went to the studio to have them done.  That way, all the backgrounds looked the same.  Ben doesn’t have his yet but will soon.  The girls also got a shot of them as well.  When Ben goes, I think Zach and he will have a “brothers” picture done as well.

It’s really amazing to see how fast these kids are growing up!  In just 3 years, we will have a child in college, a child in high school, a child in middle school, a child in elementary, and a child in pre-school!  How’s that for freaky!  🙂

Wonderful Chorus Concert

Brittany had her Still Middle School Fall Chorus Concert tonight and it turned out very well.  She loves singing in Honors Chorus and they did very well.  She also sang in the 8th grade chorus and did wonderfully well there too.  The chorus director also had the parents and attendees stand and sing as well!  🙂

Brittany in the picture above is on the top row on the far right-hand side.  The 6th and 7th grade chorus groups sang as well, along with an appearance by an all-girls A Capella group from Waubonsie High School.  It was a great night.  Kirstyn stayed home and watched the boys so we didn’t have to take Ben out half-way through or keep telling Zach to be quiet!  🙂

Great job Brittany!

Service Project and Halloween Festivities

Today was a very busy day!  We started off the day with a church service project at Feed My Starving Children, which is a food preparation and shipping charity.  When you go there, you make packaged meals of rice, soy, dried vegetables, and chicken powder.   Each packet is enough to feed 1 child 1 meal a day to keep them from starving to death.   I went up there with the girls this time.  Angela usually goes, but she was under the weather, so I got to go.

FeedMyStarvingChildren

It was a GREAT experience!  In just over 1 hour, we packed over 18,000 meals, enough to feed 57 children a meal a day for 1 year!  What a great feeling!  We are planning on doing this again as a ward activity again will be doing more than just 1 session.

After we finished up there, and after Angela taking everyone but Ben for pictures (his will come later and we’ll post the pictures when we get them back) we came home and got ready for a Halloween afternoon of trick-or-treating and a party with friends.  The kids got all dressed up and went out to see how much candy they could get!  🙂

Halloween-KZB

As you can see, Kirstyn dressed up as a 50’s girl with poodle skirt and all, Zach was being the Karate Kid, and Ben was an elephant.  They had so much fun!  The Raketic family came over to go out with the kids.  Sarah stayed home, worked on homework, and gave out candy to the kids who came by our house.

Halloween-Kids

They were out going house-to-house for about 1 1/2 hours or so.  They got a TON of candy!  We couldn’t believe it!  We have enough to last until next Halloween (well, not really, we love candy)!  🙂  After coming in from the cold, we all sat down and had wonderful homemade chicken noodle and vegetable soup that Angela made and it warmed us right up!  We spent the next little while in front of the TV, watching Arsenic and Old Lace with Cary Grant.  It was funny and we enjoyed it!  We hope everyone else had a happy Halloween as well!

First Metea Valley Band, Chorus & Orchestra Concert

Tonight marked another piece of history, as the Metea Valley High School Music Department held it’s very first Fall Band, Chorus, and Orchestra concerts!  It’s funny to say that, because everything at Metea this year is a first.  🙂  It just sounds cool saying that, so we keep it up!

Sarah did very well in her performance.  She played both the flute and  piccolo and had two solo parts in different songs!  She was very sick and stayed home from school today, but was rested up enough to drag herself to the concert and make the band director very relieved!  She still  felt horrible, but she played well!

2009SarahFirstBandConcert

They recorded the performance and are making CDs for everyone who wants to buy one.  We are thinking about it!

As usual, Ben decided to get fussy, and so I ended up taking him out after just the second song of the night.  We walked around the school, laughed and giggled, and took a bunch of pictures.

We would go back to the door and listen to the concert until he would get fussy again and want to run and play.  We did get to hear all of Sarah’s songs from right outside the door, however!  🙂  Keep up the great work, Sarah, and GO MUSTANGS!

Fall and Cool Weather are Here!

2009FallLeavesWell, fall is here and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to get any warmer!  It’s been cold and/or rainy for the past 2 weeks.  The leaves are starting to turn colors and it’s very beautiful.  The only problem with the leaves starting to turn is that we know winter will be here soon!  🙁  It has been an unusually cold year and we have had crazy weather.  So much for global warming!  This year has been one of the coolest in the record books!  🙂  I guess people will have to start thinking about global cooling maybe?

The picture to the left is of one of the many trees in our neighborhood turning colors.  A bunch of the trees are the same type, so it looks like our neighborhood’s trees are on fire!  🙂  There are many leaves to rake and bag and the boys really enjoy this!  They love getting out in the leaves, raking them into piles, jumping in them, and then throwing them around the yard at each other again.  I don’t think they ever get anything bagged, but it sure is fun to watch them!  🙂

Zach Final Soccer Game and Pictures

Zach-Last-Soccer-2009Well, Zach’s first soccer season is over.  He played his last game today!  When we got up and got ready to go, it was raining a little outside and it was very cold.  Then it turned to SNOW!  Looks like global warming is alive and well!  🙂  We bundled him up and we went and played!  I was kind of hoping that it would stay snowing but it didn’t and the field was just wet.  That would have made for some GREAT pictures!

Of the 8 kids, only 4 showed up (probably because the other families thought the game would be canceled or the kids were cold and just didn’t want to come).  The other team had as many and they played with no goalies and smaller goals.  They lost, so their season record was 1 and 2.  At least the team won one game.  🙂  It was very cold and with the weather the way it’s been, I think that the kids and the parents are glad that there aren’t more games to be played!  😐

After the game, the team and individual pictures were handed out.  Unfortunately, 3 of our players were missing from the pictures…

Official Band Picture

Sarah got her official Metea Valley High School Marching Mustangs band picture back today and we wanted to post it as soon as possible!  She had so much fun and really enjoyed it.  Sarah is on the top row on the right-hand side, next to the directors…

Even though the band was small this year, they really had a LOT of fun and she said it was WAY better than last year!  🙂

National Track and Field Champion!!!

We got an e-mail from Carmen today letting us know about everything that is going on.  This past weekend, she ran in the Spain National Track and Field Championships in Barcelona.  She said she didn’t do as well as she had hoped, but in her division, she placed 20th in the entire country!  Sounds awesome to us!  GREAT job Carmen!  We don’t have any pictures, but may soon!

Brittany First Orchestra Concert of the Year!

Brittany participated tonight in her first orchestra concert of the  year.  It was held at Waubonsie Valley High School and was done in conjunction with the first high school orchestra concert.  Still Middle School and Scullen Middle School played together, and then each middle school played with one of the high school orchestra groups.  It was wonderful to listen to.  They have come such a long way since first picking up their instruments in 5th grade!  Brittany really loves playing and sounds great!  We just need to get her to practice more!  🙂

Brittany-OrchestraConcert

After the middle schools played, the high school orchestras took over and it was absolutely phenomenal to listen to them!  Our district really works hard and places a HUGE emphasis on being outstanding in the arts!  It’s no wonder that the schools in our district always win Grammy Gold Status from the Academy!  Keep up the GREAT work, Brittany!
