RLF Session 3 Great Experience for Kirk

I just finished up my 3rd of 6 Regional Leadership Forum sessions.  What a GREAT experience.  I read 5 more books, totalling 15 since the first of January.  They were 1) First Break all the Rules, 2) The Zen of Listening, 3) The Prince (by Machiavelli), 4) Brain Rules, and 5) The Pearl (by John Steinbeck).  Discussing them with the group was wonderful and very insightful.  I also heard presentations from 2 prominant CIOs, participated in many leadership activities, and continued to build relationships with the participants from all over the midwest.

On Monday night (27th) for our group activity, we were blessed to hear from one of the Lost Boys of Sudan.  The story is absolutely humbling what they went through.  If you are not familar with who they are, check it out:  Lost Boys of Sudan History.  To think that any boys this age with no parents could survive what they did is amazing!

It’s hard to believe that we are already half-way done with the program.  Only 3 more sessions to go and then SIMposium in Seattle in November.

Double Dose of Success!

What a GREAT day today was!  Two wonderful things happened in our family:

1)  Sarah tried out for section leader for the Metea High School Marching Band last week, and today she found out that she made it!  We are very excited for her and she can’t wait.  Part of this experience will be to attend a 2-day leadership course at a prestigious downtown Chicago music school where she will receive some training.  Way to go Sarah!

2)  Kirk just finished up a very rigorous course on ITIL v3 Foundations.  ITIL stands for Information Technology Infrastructure Library and is a worldwide standard for IT Service Management (read more about it here).  The training course was only 3 days but was VERY brutal.  300 pages of content and by the end of each day, his head was swimming!  After studying for multiple hours every night, exam time came and he passed it!  He now has an ITIL v3 Foundations Certification, which will look good on the resume!  🙂

Win in 200!

brittany-200meter-win1Brittany shocked us all and made us proud today at her track meet as she secured a commanding win in her heat of the 200 meters!  She came around the turn strong and never looked back!  Her time of 33.59 was the 2nd fastest girls 7th grade time in the entire meet!  Congratulations to Brittany!  She also ran the 400 meters and had a personal best as well.  She also tried out the triple jump and didn’t like that too much!  Looks like Brittany found her event!  She’ll probably be named to the 4 x 200 meter relay team for the next meet.  We’ll wait and see!

A Little Taste of Spain in Our Home

Our family will be joined in July by a young woman from Spain!  A lady involved in the PTA sent us some information about this and after much thought, we decided we would jump in and do it.  We are VERY excited!  This will give our family a little taste of another culture, as well as help Sarah with her Spanish.

The girl’s name is Carmen Montanes and she is 14 years old.  She is from San Fernando (Cadiz) which is on the southwest coast of Spain.  The program she will be coming over here seems wonderful.  She will stay with us from June 30 – July 28.  While here, she will be able to do things with the program such as a White Sox game, Six Flags, museums and other attractions in downtown Chicago, a few local activities, etc.  They take 2 day trips a week.  The rest of the time, she gets to spend with our family seeing what we like to do and how things are in an American family.

We’ll keep you posted on how this goes.  We are so excited to have this experience!

Brittany Right on Track!

brittany-1st-trackmeetBrittany had her first Still Middle School track meet this week and did very well.  She competed in 3 events:  1) Shot Put, 2) 1600 meters, and 3) 4o0 meters.

Her shot distance was almost 15 feet (which is pretty good considering her size and weight).  She ran the mile in 8:29, and ran the 400 in 1:28 (the mile and 400 were back-to-back so that was pretty crazy)!  Now that she has her trial times, she knows what she can shoot for to better her times in the future.

Overall, Still Middle School performed very well (much better than in Cross Country which Brittany also ran).  GREAT job Brittany!

Kirtland Temple Visit – Day 4 of Whirlwind Tour

kirtlandtempleToday, the last day of our 4-day spring break, 1500 mile road trip (Sunday – Wednesday), we visited the Kirtland Temple on our way home.  The Community of Christ has done a nice job keeping the temple maintained.  They have added a new visitor center addition since we were last there:  a theater where, after the movie is over, the curtains open up to a full wall of glass looking out onto the temple.  They now charge $2 per person “maintenance fee” to tour inside the temple which is a little weird, but we paid and went on the tour.  The kids’ knowledge of the events of the times stunned the tour guide!  🙂

What a great sacrifice those early saints made to build that temple.

All-in-all, we had a GREAT trip and even enjoyed most of the 24 hours worth of driving (round trip) we did. 🙂  We hope that the kids learned a lot from the trip and now have a greater appreciation for our Church heritage.

Back to Church Roots… Palmyra

After we visited Kirtland (see previous post), we drove to Palmyra where we stayed at the new and beautiful Palmyra Inn (two thumbs up if you go there and need a place to stay).  Today we saw the sites around Kirtland (the Hill Cumorah, the Grandin Building, the Sacred Grove, the first log cabin, the frame house, etc.)  and then drove to Fayette to the Whitmer farm where the Church was re-organized.  What an experience for us and for the kids.  Being there in early spring gave us a feel of what it would have been like for Joseph.

palmyratempleThere have been a LOT of updates done to the sites since we were there last, especially around the sacred grove site.  The old log cabin has been rebuilt, there is a new visitor center, the road has been moved to eliminate traffic between sites, and the frame home has been restored to period time.

The last time we were there the Palmyra Temple was being built.  Now it is completed and we had a chance as a family to walk the grounds together.  The kids enjoyed the picture taken by the sign to add to our collection of all the temples we’ve been to.

Visit to Kirtland

Well, spring break is here and as is typical of the Halliday family, we decided to do a road trip!  Our destination:  LDSwhitneystore Church sites in Kirtland, OH and Palmyra, NY!  Yesterday we drove the 6 1/2 hours to Kirtland, visited the John Johnson Farm (in Hiram, OH), and today enjoyed the sites in Kirtland.

We hadn’t been here since Kirstyn was about 6 months old (almost 10 years ago)!  We were impressed with all the new sites they had built there (sawmill, ashery, Whitney home, updated visitor center).  The Whitney store was the highlight due to the amazing things that happened there.  We didn’t get to tour the Kirtland Temple becuase it’s closed on Monday’s and Tuesdays.

At the visitor’s center, there was an exhibit of bronze sculptures that was absolutely amazing.  The sculptor’s name is Angela Johnson and the exhibit is called “The Healing Power of Jesus Christ.”  What a talented and insightful artist!  The exhibit is moving to Nauvoo in May so we’ll get to see it again for our family reunion.  The sculptor has a web site you can visit.  It’s http://www.ajsculptures.com/.

We had a unique experience in Kirtland this time around.  The senior missionary couple (Elder and Sister Christensen) were going home the next day after their 18 months of service and we were their last tour.  The really gave it their all, knowing that we would be the last ones that would enjoy their knowledge and spirit.  It was quite the experience.  The kids really enjoyed their time in Kirtland.

My New Web Site

frontpageshot3My newly designed web site is now up and running and available for you to take a look at!  All you have to do is use the same old URL and you will be  redirected:  http://www.kirkhalliday.com

There’s still a few things I’m working on, like updating my resume, and linking into photo albums, but other than that, it’s alive and has a new breath of fresh air.  It’s based on the Joomla content management system, and based on a pretty cool template.

There are certain things you can see only if you are logged in.  If you want an ID and password, please let me know and I’ll create one for you.

Injury-Free Weekend!

We did it!  We had an injury-free weekend!  No stitches for Ben, no sprains for Sarah, no other bumps or bruises!  We were hoping we wouldn’t have 3 weeks in a row with something happen!  🙂

We did have a hugely busy Saturday, however…  It all started at 6:30 where Sarah worked until 1pm at the Waubonsie Craft Fair and Bake sale to raise funds for marching band participation.  Angela joined her from 10-1.  While they were gone, Kirstyn had a Stake Activity Days event in Joliet and was gone until about 1 as well, after which Kirk and Kirstyn had a daddy/daughter date at Kirstyn’s favorite Chinese Restaurant.  Shortly after that, Kirk and Angela attended a temple session (gone from 3-8:30) and while we were gone, Brittany was picked up for a babysitting job from 4:30-10:30.

Needless to say, we didn’t see much of each other as an entire family today!  😐

Big Love, Bad Taste

Say No to Big Love!Like other faiths, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sometimes finds itself on the receiving end of attention from Hollywood or Broadway, television series or books, and the news media. Sometimes depictions of the Church and its people are quite accurate. Sometimes the images are false or play to stereotypes.  Occasionally, they are in appallingly bad taste.   We as a family are saddened by the lack of sensitivity and bad taste HBO is showing in their series “Big Love” and how they depict sacred temple ceremonies.  What can we say to this?  “It’s HBO friends, look no further.”  Visit the Church’s web site to read the official statement:  http://newsroom.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/eng/commentary/the-publicity-dilemma

YouTube also has a great clip from the church on why Mormons build temples.  See it here:  http://www.youtube.com/mormonmessages

This too shall pass.  The ironic thing about the whole situation is that the publicity received by the church will do nothing more than spark even more interest and help the church grow, just as it did during the Mitt Romney campaign. 🙂

Stitches Out

Ben’s stitches came out yesterday.  His scar will be obvious for a little while, but it should blend into his eyebrow eventually (especially if he gets Kirk’s eyebrows).  🙂

Sarah’s follow-up x-rays happened yesterday, as well.  And Brittany was at the doctor on Monday.  Hopefully next week, they’ll be absolutely no doctor visits.  (Ben did put his teeth through his lip today, but alas, no need for stitches!  Hooray!)  Zachary did have to get 2 cavities taken care of last week, so Kirstyn was our only one without doctor or dentist visits the past 2 weeks.  Oy!
