Awesome, Successful Hobbs Family Reunion!

hobbsfamilyreunion2009-2

We had an incredibly WONDERFUL Hobbs Family Reunion in Nauvoo, Illinois on June 23-25!  Mom, Dad, all 8 kids and their families, Auntie Carla Fisher, Sue and Arlen Mounteer, Ben and Ashlee Despain, and Corey and Ashley Mounteer were there.  49 in all!  We all met on Tuesday the 23rd and had lunch, watched the “Just Plain Anna Amanda” show, and then checked into our 2 big, beautiful homes.  What a wonderful place to stay (Hyrum Kimball Village).

We spent the next 2 days going to the temple (session for the adults and baptisms for the kids), watching great shows like “Sunset by the Mississippi,” “High Hopes and Riverboats,” “Rendezvous in Old Nauvoo,” taking wagon rides around the town, visiting some of the historical places, and eating LOTS of food that families were assigned as well as a GREAT buffet dinner (gift to all of us by Mom and Dad) at the Hotel Nauvoo.

We took the family picture above at the Patty Sessions cabin (a relative of the Hobbs family that lived in Nauvoo back in the day).

We also enjoyed guests at our home on both ends of the reunion as well.  Mom, Dad, Mark, Carla and Scott’s family, David and Gina’s family, Joseph and Julie’s family, and Auntie Carla came for a few days before the reunion and we had a ball.  After the reunion we were able to enjoy more of David and Gina’s family and Auntie Carla.  Brian and Lee Ann’s family also came and spent the night on Friday.  We had a great time in downtown Chicago with them going to the Field Museum of Natural History before they flew out Saturday afternoon.

Thanks again to all for making this such a special time!

Brittany Accepted to Leadership Program!

Brittany recently applied to participate in a leadership program through the city called the Aurora Leadership Institute (ALI).  Only 30 kids each year are accepted, and out of the hundreds of applications submitted, she was chosen!  We are very proud of her for her desire to do this. It is a week-long, all-day leadership program (starting at the end of July) which will help her build her leadership skills.  Her application was quite impressive.  Adding up all her church leadership and service opportunities, student government participation, club attendance, cross-country and track team, and a well-written essay on why she should be picked, we (the proud parents) thought that she would be a shoe-in!  🙂  Congrats Brittany!

Brittany and the Waubonsie Track Club

Brittany is participating in a track club this summer through Waubonsie Valley High School.  She attends practices daily and has a few meets throughout the summer.  She is very excited for this becuase she is participating with her good friend Christina, and she gets to work on her skills at the 200, 400, triple jump and other track and field events.  She recently had her first track meet and did very well.  She even tried the discus!  She had a personal best in the 400 which, for the girls, placed first in her heat.  Keep up the GREAT work, Brittany!

RLF Session 4 – Great Experience!

I just finished up session #4 of 6 in my Regional Leadership Forum (RLF) today.  Yesterday and today were, as usual, outstanding as I was able to get back together with my new friends and participate in a wide range of leadership and book discussions.  On Monday, I led the book discussion on “Made to Stick.”  I really loved this book and it is helping me to communicate my ideas better.  I got feedback that so far, it was one of the participant’s favorite and most entertaining discussions!  What a thrill!  I used “sticky” ads from TV and print to make my points, gave them many handouts, and facilitated a group discussion on what makes ideas stick.

As a group on Monday, we traveled to downtown Chicago via train and took an architecture boat tour on the Chicago River.  That was something that I’d always wanted to do.  It was a little stressful at the beginning and at the end, becuase I was the main person in charge of the activity (reservations, train tickets, etc.) and was hoping and praying that everyone would make it downtown and that we wouldn’t leave anyone!

I can’t believe we only have 2 sessions left before our final meeting in Seattle in November where we’ll graduate!  This experience has made me a BUNCH of new and great friends and helped build relationships that I will treasure for many years to come!

Technology Forum Here I Come!

Today, I (Kirk) was selected by the School District’s CIO to be part of the District 204 Community Technology Forum.  This is a volunteer forum that I applied for and was selected.  I am very honored to participate with other technology-minded members of the community to help make our district a better place to be educated.  From my understanding, the response to the CIO’s request for participation was overwhelming and to be selected is very exciting!  Currently, there are 30 schools, 28,000 students, and over 10,000 computers (laptops and desktops) in the district.

We Love Our Teachers!

Last night, we held our 5th Annual Teacher Appreciation Dinner for the kids’ teachers.  We honored them with a dinner, a program (where the kids read poems and letters they had written – Zach also read a book all by himself , sang songs, and played music), and a gift.  This year, Sarah invited Mrs. Chaloka, her Honors English teacher.  She came with her husband and daughter.  Brittany invited Miss Roman, her chorus teacher (she was thrilled to be a repeat from last year)!  🙂  Kirstyn invited her main teacher, Mrs. Sobun and her math teacher, Miss Lindsey.  Miss Lindsey brought her mom who was also teaches at the elementary and has taught our kids.  Zachary invited Mrs. Pierce who was his pre-school teacher for the past two years.

We truly love to do this for the teachers who make a difference in our kids’ lives.  The teachers are thrilled to be a part of this love to participate.  We challenge all of you reading this to do the same for teachers who are making a difference wherever you may be.  They are the ones who, along with us, prepare our kids to be successful in the future.  Their quiet service deserves some attention.

Zach’s Last Day of Pre-School

zach-lastdaypreschoolWOW!  It’s hard to believe that Zach is now done with pre-school and will start next year Full-Day Kindergarten!  He has LOVED pre-school and his teachers have been GREAT!  We are so thankful to them for how much they have done with him!  He went to the Zoo with the class this year and loved every minute of it!  His personal helper, Rachel Bostick (with Zach below) really made him happy!zachandrachel

Busy Memorial Day!

This Memorial Day was crazy busy!  While Sarah marched in the Aurora Memorial Day Parade with the Waubonsie Warrior Marching Band (Angela and Ben watched), Brittany, Kirstyn, and Zach went to a Kane County Cougars baseball game (Kirk watched) as part of the Ozzie Reading Club.  We had a GREAT time and loved it!  Go girls!

Gombert State Fair

kirstyn-statefairKirstyn participated in the 4th Grade State Fair at Gombert Elementary last night. She sang in a chorus, and had a speaking part on the program, part of which was leading the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. After the program, we went into the library where they had all the kids state floats set up. They make these out of shoe boxes and each child is assigned a state. Kirstyn’s state was Idaho. Her float turned out VERY cool! She even had a picture of her mom on it along with Philo T. Farnsworth, Gutzon Borglum, and other famous Idahoans. Way to go Kirstyn! Still Middle School fiddle group also played as part of the program but Brittany was sick and couldn’t make it. We would have loved to see her play!

Tracking Success at Still!

stillmsBrittany finished up her track season with Still Middle School yesterday and they did extremely well!  Brittany was not feeling well at all (sore throat, headache and chills) and the poor thing ran her heart out in the 800 Meter Relay (where she ran the 400 meter leg).  Although her team came in last, Brittany gave it her all and didn’t quit, even though she was sick.  She fared better in the triple jump, however, reaching her personal best of 22 feet, 8 1/2 inches.  She was very happy with this!  🙂

Up until now, Still Middle School had never won anything major in their conference meet.  Yesterday, the tide turned!  The 7th grade boys team took first place overall in their division and were named conference champions!  The 8th grade boys team took second place in their division and both the 7th and 8th grade girls’ teams placed 3rd.  Way to go Still!  They will get a big conference champions banner and other recognitions placed up on the walls the school!

Award for Sarah

Sarah has LOVED attending Seminary at the church this year!  Every morning she is up and ready to go for a 5:55am start!  Seminary graduation was  held tonight for all graduating Seniors, and at this graduation ceremony, Sarah was awarded the Stake President’s Award.  This is the highest achievement award you can get in Seminary.  It recognizes 100% attendance for the entire year, memorizing all 25 scripture mastery scriptures (this year from the New Testament) and other memorizations, and 100% reading (at least 10 minutes every day) and finish reading the entire New Testament.  We are very proud of her for her dedication!  Congratulations Sarah!

A Taste of the Arts…

Today we attended the District 204 Fine Arts Festival at Waubonsie High School.  We were there for much of the day as all three girls had displays and performances.  Sarah played the flute and piccolo with the band and did very well.  Her band teacher asked her if she would learn to play the piccolo (not much different than the flute) and Sarah picked this up easily!  Brittany had 2 performances:  She played her violin with the orchestra and sang with the chorus.  She sounded great as well!  Kirstyn sang with her elementary school choir and had 2 items on display (a mosaic and a sculpture).  She was very happy to be there.  GO GIRLS!

It really is amazing how much fine art talent is in our district.  This past year, Waubonsie High School was awarded a Grammy by the Grammy Foundation which means it is in the top music education programs in the country!  In 2006 it was awarded Gold status meaning it was in the top 3 schools.  I guess now Sarah can say she has won a Grammy!  🙂  Between the two high schools in the district, they  have been recognized by the Grammy Foundation 14 times!
