Audition, Clue, and Driving!

Today was a pretty busy day!  Kirstyn (in addition to basketball practice) had auditions for the school musical.  She is very excited for these and has been practicing like crazy.  She really felt bad last year after not making it and is determined that this year, she will be in it.  She is (as are we) concerned that the basketball participation may inhibit her ability to make it (due to conflicting schedules) but we’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Brittany went out driving this afternoon for one of her last driving sessions with the school.  She is so excited and is getting much better at driving than when she first started.  I am finally starting to feel comfortable riding in the car with her…  🙂

Tonight at the church, we had a combined young men/young women activity called Human Clue.  Sarah was in charge of the refreshments.  They ended up having a french fry bar which was really cool!  The Human Clue theme was around the Book of Mormon and so the classrooms the teams of kids visited were Book of Mormon places, the people in the rooms were Book of Mormon characters, and the weapons were Book of Mormon or ancient weapons.  It was a LOT of fun.

The refreshments were great too!  Sarah titled it a “NeFry Bar.”  🙂

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of the table fully loaded.  It was really cool with all the fries out on the table, the cheese, and all the other things.  Great job Sarah!

Kirstyn’s First Basketball Game

Today was Kirstyn’s first basketball game as a Lady Bulldog.  We had a great time watching her.  She still isn’t 100% sure exactly what she is supposed to be doing as she has never played competitive basketball before, but she did great!  She even scored!!!!  For me, that was the best part of it, even if they don’t win a single game all season!  🙂

They got beat pretty badly (26-4) but the good thing is that Kirstyn scored half their points!  🙂  We had a chuckle about that.  🙂  We look forward to seeing her play in many more games.  She really likes playing basketball.

On another less important note, today was my (Kirk’s) birthday.  We celebrated a great X anniversary of my 29th birthday!  The boys me a wonderful birthday cake that was decorated with about 10 gallons of sprinkles!

For the celebration, and we had steak and all kinds of non-vegetable things for dinner!  🙂  I got some great presents, including one of the funnest which was to go and watch Kirstyn play and see her score her first points!  🙂

Another Busy Saturday!

Yet another really busy Saturday…  This morning, Kirstyn went to EEP where they discussed electronic circuits.  She loves being a part of the engineering program.  I had to hurry and go pick her up after her event and ran over to Zachary’s second basketball game.  He had a great time and they WON AGAIN!!!  Two in a row!  He was so excited!

This afternoon (thank heaven we didn’t have to take them), Sarah and Brittany went up to the high school and played in the Pep Band for the boys basketball game.  They always have a great time when they do that.  Angela and I spent the time they were gone working with Kirstyn and the boys to clean up the house and then we played a game and watched a movie.  🙂

Bingo Night

Tonight was very cute.  Sarah took time out of her busy schedule and took Zach over to Gombert Bingo Night for a date night with her little brother.  Zachary was so excited to be with his sister and to have fun at the school.  They didn’t end up winning anything, but both had a GREAT time and got to spend some time together.  What a great sister!  🙂

Kirstyn Makes Basketball Team!!!

When I got home from work today, Kirstyn was totally excited!  She made the Still Middle School Basketball Team!  She doesn’t know which team she will be on (7th Grade Double-A or Single-A) but her hard work and hustle at tryouts really paid off!  🙂

She thinks that she will be on the Single-A team because she’s never played basketball before, but is really excited that she made something she tried out for.  She still feels bad about not making the musical last year or the volleyball team this year, so this wipes out all her frustration.  Kirstyn, we’re so proud of you!!!  🙂

Zach – Star of the Week!

This week Zach was chosen in his school class to be the “Star of the Week!”  He was SO excited and worked hard on his poster outlining all his interests.  He looked forward the entire weekend to being able to present his poster and to talk to his class.  One of the surprises he got was that Angela went to McDonald’s, picked up lunch, took it along with Ben to school and surprised him!  He got to eat lunch with Mom and Ben!

He loved eating his happy meal, and showing off his little brother to everyone at the table.  Ben is quite the entertainment novelty (just ask his sisters)!  🙂

Christmas Carol in Chicago

Today Kirstyn and her school class went to see The Christmas Carol at the Goodman Theater in downtown Chicago.  I was fortunate enough to be a chaperone with her.  We had a great time and really enjoyed the production.  It was pretty funny.

Afterward, the girls all wrote thank you notes to me to tell me how much fun they had and how much fun I was as a chaperone.  How sweet is that?  🙂

Technology and Collage Concert – Day 1

Tonight I had a meeting at the district office with a group of administrators, teachers, and parents to talk about the end-user device technology strategy in district.  This is an extension of the technology strategy committee I was on.  It was a very interesting discussion and I am very curious to see not as much what the district adopts, but how it implements it.

I was a little nervous because the meeting went right up until about the time I had to leave to go to the girl’s Collage Concert at Metea.  With the tight schedule, Angela ended up bringing the boys and picking me up from my meeting.  We rushed up there and had a GREAT time at the concert!  The girls did an outstanding job, as well as did all the other groups and small ensembles that performed.  Brittany played her violin, Sarah played her flute, and Sarah also played in a recorder quartet.  🙂  Who would have thought those annoying recorders in elementary school could sound so good!  🙂  The boys did a great job sitting quiet and letting themselves be entertained.  We were quite surprised they did as well as they did!

The picture above was after the concert as we were not allowed to take pictures during the concert.

Great job girls!  We only could have 4 tickets each night, so Kirstyn stayed home.  Tomorrow I get to take her and go to the second night of the concert.

Honors Concert and Driving!

Tonight, Kirstyn had her Still Middle School honors concert with all the top performing groups.  She played her clarinet wonderfully well.  She wishes she was also in the Honors Chorus, but that’s OK.  She’s doing a great job with band, and if she was in Honors Chorus too, she would be going to school early almost every single morning.  😐

After the concert, they had a big punch and cookie reception which the boys liked MUCH better than the actual concert itself.  🙂

While the concert was going on, Brittany was out driving with her instructor for the first time!  😐  She was excited but SUPER nervous and couldn’t stop pacing around the house talking about it.  She went a sheet of white when the guy came to the door and rang the doorbell.  In talking with her afterward, she said that she didn’t need to be that nervous and it wasn’t that bad.  🙂  She’ll get the hang of it and with practice, will end up being a good driver (as long as we can get her to keep the music off in the car while driving)!  🙂

Prayer, Pep, and Crystal!

Welcome to December!!!

Today, Angela attended the Naperville Mayor’s Inter-faith Prayer Breakfast at the YMCA.  She was in charge of all the music and it turned out GREAT!  She had a string quartet from Metea Valley High School, and a duet from Waubonsie Valley High School.

Everything went well until they were taking down the backdrop and stage.  She wasn’t paying attention and got smacked in the side of the head with a piece of PVC pipe and it cut her open right above the eyebrow.  The poor kid helping her felt absolutely horrible as she walked off bleeding all over to clean up.  We thought she would need stitches but she just but a butterfly bandage on it and kept going!  🙂  What a trooper!

Tonight, Sarah and Brittany had their first Pep Band performance at the high school for a basketball game.  They were really excited and love to do this!  We love the fact that when they need to do something like this, that Sarah can just drive them and we don’t have to worry about that in our schedules!!!!  🙂

While they were off doing that, Kirstyn was put in charge of the boys and Angela and I went out on a date to see the Neuqua Valley High School Crystal Concert!  It was a sold-out show.  Normally we wouldn’t go to this concert, but the department chair at the high school is also leading the Art Speaks committee we were on and asked if any of us would like tickets.  When we got there, there was a long line waiting to see if there were any tickets left.  We went right up to the front and said “we have tickets per Chip!”  When they brought out the tickets, we got a lot of looks from all the people in line.  Some people that we know, were wondering how we new Chip and how we got VIP treatment!  🙂  It was funny!

The concert was really good and it is really amazing to see the amount of musical talent in our District.  It’s no wonder that schools in our district are awarded Grammy status each year!  🙂  We can’t wait until next week when Metea has their Collage concert and we get to see Sarah and Brittany perform!

Dentist, EEP, and Stake Conference

Today was a pretty busy day!  Kirstyn had her Engineering Program (EEP) at NIU in Naperville and was very excited to go.  She loves all the activities that they do, and is excited to become an Architectural  Engineer herself!  🙂

After she got done, Kirstyn and I joined the rest of the herd over at the dentist office for our semi-annual cleanings!  We all came out of it luckily with a clean bill except for Zach.  🙁  That guy doesn’t have the teeth that the rest of us have.  He has 4 cavities that need to be filled, and I think that 3 of them are in permanent teeth!  Arrrgh!  We try to brush and floss his teeth well, but I guess we’ll have to try harder!

This afternoon and tonight, we attended meetings for Stake Conference.  I had to leave at 3:30 and carpooled down for our leadership meetings from 4-6.  They then fed us dinner, and Angela met me at 7 for the Saturday evening session which is always very good.  Not sure sometimes if it’s always really good due to the fact that the speakers are awesome, or because there aren’t any kids to worry about taking in and out and so you can pay attention!  🙂

Angela Fly Home and Art Speaks!

Today, Angela flew home and we are so excited to have her here with us!  We missed her so much!  Her flight went well, although she didn’t get bumped up to get more leg room.  🙁  Her flight from LA was a little delayed so she got back home a little late!  A sister from our Ward went and picked her up, which we were very happy for!

I couldn’t go pick her up because I had our Art Speaks meeting tonight.  This is a pretty neat group that is dedicated to helping the community become more acquainted with the arts in school, especially right now when the big federal push is all around Science, Math,  Engineering, and Technology (STEM).  We like to refer to our group as the A that makes STEM “STEAM” and gives education momentum.

Angela was totally worn out when I got home from my meeting.   She’s going to put off unpacking until tomorrow so we’ll have our debrief then.  🙂

Good to have you home, beautiful!  🙂
