Marching Band First Home Game Performance!

Today the Metea Marching Mustangs had their first home game performance!  They did really well for their first full show presentation to a live audience!  Brittany was really excited and couldn’t wait to get together with all her band friends!

This year, Brittany is in the color guard again and gets to carry the American flag during the pre-game show.  During the halftime show, she is on marimba the whole time.

I am excited to be a “pit dad” again and help out assembling and taking down the front ensemble at halftime.  It’s great to be down on the field with the kids.  Brittany treated me really nice today!  🙂

Go Britt!

School Starts!

Angela came home from BYU just in time because school started today!  We didn’t get a picture of Brittany because we had to leave early, but we did get pictures of Kirstyn and Zach before they left for the day…

They were so excited to go today to see friends they haven’t seen for awhile, get to know their new teachers, and start learning!  Kirstyn is especially excited because she is now the big girl on campus in 8th grade and everyone will look up to them.  🙂

Band Camp Starts and Funeral

Today Sarah got up early and reported to the first day of BYU Marching Band Camp!  She was a bit nervous, but all those feelings went away as they got to know each other and started working on fundamentals and drills.  She says that she has a wonderful section that she can’t wait to get to know better!

While Sarah was working hard out in the hot sun, Angela drove up to Bountiful to attend the funeral of her Great Aunt Grace.  She was the sweetest lady and always had a smile on her face.  Her passing was very timely for Angela to be able to attend and she got to see some family members that she hadn’t seen in awhile.

When Angela and Sarah called home tonight, they were very tired but happy!  Sarah’s first day went great and she can’t wait until tomorrow!  They have some “re-auditions” to “place” them, and Sarah is nervous!  🙂  You’ll do GREAT little lady!  🙂

First Day in Provo and Band Fireside

Today was Sarah’s first full day in Provo!   Since things really haven’t started up yet and her ward did not meet, Angela picked up Sarah and they went to church with  Greg and Lisa.  It turns out that there is a rule that Angela can’t stay in Sarah’s room, even though she is her mom, so Angela is staying with Greg and Lisa while she’s out there.  That was a real let-down for Angela and she was bummin’ about it.

Anyway, after church, they enjoyed the afternoon, and then Sarah went to a Sunday night marching band fireside to kick off the season.  Marching band camp starts tomorrow and she can’t wait to get going and meet new people, learn new things, and have a blast!  She can’t wait for that feeling to perform in front of 65,000 fans!  🙂

Sarah Piccolo Lessons

Sarah got a new piccolo the other day because they don’t march with flutes at BYU in the marching band.  She’s pretty spoiled!  A new open-hole flute for Christmas, and now a new $1,100 piccolo for band!  She’s not even gone yet and we already feel the sucking sound for money from Provo!  🙂 She has started up her lessons again to get prepped for her marching band camp in about 10 days.  We can’t believe she is already leaving.  🙁

Marching Band Leadership Event

Yesterday and today, Brittany had a Marching Band leadership conference at the VanderCook College of Music in downtown Chicago.  She was really looking forward to going because Sarah had said so many good things about going there when she was a Section Leader.  Brittany is the Section Leader for the Pit this coming year and is very excited to try out her leadership skills!  🙂

They spent all day on Friday there, came back home late, and then left early this morning to go back downtown.  They got back this afternoon and had a Section Leader party which she really had fun at.  We’re hoping that she does well this year.  They are very excited about the marching show this year which entitled “The Music of Styx.”  I know all the adults who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s will love it!  🙂

We’re proud of you Brittany!

Major Trek to Dance!

Today was a VERY long day!  Sarah found out that the niece (I think) of some friends of ours is in the Marching Band at BYU and is the piccolo section leader!  She was in town visiting and so Sarah and Kristen went up to meet and talk with her about expectations, etc.  What a great way to start off!

Tonight, I drove Brittany and a few of her church friends up to Kenosha Wisconsin to a dance held by the Kenosha Stake.  This was organized by the son of the Stake President, who, it just so happens is one of the guys she met at EFY and (as discussed in a previous blog post) is the son of the friends of ours who used to live next door when we were in the Naperville 1st Ward.  🙂  The girls were so giddy on the way up that it almost drove me crazy!  🙂

They had an “awesome, amazing, incredible, and wonderful” time at the dance (in their words), while I drove around the countryside, stopped for some junk food, and then went back to the church to take a nap in preparation for the long drive home.  The dance finished at 10pm, but we didn’t leave until about 10:30pm because they were being so social and couldn’t tear themselves away from the guys.  😐

On the way home, we got totally jammed by Chicago O’Hare Airport by construction and traffic.  By this time, it was around midnight and we couldn’t believe how many cars were out!  We didn’t get everyone home and back to our house until after 2am!  We are really going to feel it for the next day or so!  😐

Sarah Made Marching Band!!!!!!!

Today we got an e-mail out of the blue that Sarah had made the BYU Marching Band!  She was so excited when she found out that I thought she was going to hyperventilate!  🙂  She had given up hope that she would make it and boy was this a great surprise!  Since they don’t march with flutes in the band, we now have to buy her a piccolo which is going to set us back quite a bit!  😐  Oh well, just to see the excitement and joy on her face makes it worth it!  🙂

The cool thing is that three kids from our area are in the band… Sarah (piccolo) and Hannah (color guard) from our ward, and Kristen (piccolo) from the 4th ward.  It really helps to come from a grammy-winning district!  🙂

Go Cougars, go Sarah, and go Cougar Marching Band!

Kirstyn Summer Chorus Concert

Today we went and saw Kirstyn’s Summer Chorus Concert at Metea.  The kids had been working really hard all week to put on this concert at the end of their summer music experience.  They did a GREAT job!  It never ceases to amaze me at how good the  music program in our district is.

The kids memorized so many songs, and they had ensembles of just the guys, just the girls, other combinations, and instruments to boot.  Great job Kirstyn!  We’re proud of you!

Summer Chorus Starts!

Today Kirstyn started a summer chorus program at Metea Valley High School.  It is for all the middle schools in the district to give them practice and prepare them for the next year.  Our district is great at doing these kinds of programs and it is wonderful to see how much time and effort they give to the arts.  It’s no wonder our Music program is one of the best in the nation!  Best of luck, Kirstyn!  We know you’ll do great!

EEP Camp, ARTSpeaks BBQ, and Swimming

Today was a busy day in our household!  Kirstyn started her 2nd year of Engineering Camp at Northern Illinois University and is looking forward to a great week.  She’s going to the camp with Ashley Smith, one of her best friends, so they should have a wonderful time.

Ben and Zach also started swimming lessons.  They were so excited yesterday when we were talking about it!  They absolutely LOVE water and are not quite to where they could live in it, but they sure want to!  🙂  They did a great job their first day and Zach is now talking about doing swimming on a team rather than football.  He seems pretty serious about it so he may not play this fall.  We’ll see.

Tonight, Angela and I went over to Chip Staley’s house (the fine arts chair at Neuqua Valley High School in our district) for an ARTSpeaks group BBQ and meeting.  We had a wrap-up discussion about the results of the Fine Arts Festival and what we heard and learned from attendees there.  It was great to hear what had happened at the other 2 schools as well.  We then had dinner and relaxed outside in their huge back yard.  They have cool planter boxes and Angela ribbed me for not building some for us.  🙂  It’s great to be involved in this group.  We are now building relationships with more and more people (including all three fine arts chairs at the high schools) and other community members.  Every time we meet, Angela and I come away feeling energized about our involvement in community and school efforts.

BYU Jumpstart Party

Tonight, Sarah attended a BYU Jumpstart Party at the home of an alumni here in Naperville (member of the Naperville 1st Ward).  They had a great time meeting many of the incoming freshmen they would be going to school with.  The main reason to pull them all together was to give them a pep talk about what to expect, and also get them acquainted with others from the area so they would feel like they had some automatic friends when they arrived on campus.
